The first islamic invasion (the one that took out Persia and crippled the ERE) was probably lead by jews at the very least. Contemporary accounts from Jerusalem are near unanimous on the Arabs' need to hit the Synagogue of a Saturday and their reverence for the local rabbis. The religion of islam is a likely retcon to placate the non jewish arabs absorbed into the first Califate.
Plus I'd like to point out the kingdoms of Khazaria, Yemen and Axum all proselytized at different points in history into judaism. And finally the genetic makeup of European jews is significanyly differemt from Israeli jews, indicating they descended more from converts than exiles.
Fact is judaism only really stopped proselyizing when christianity and islam got started doing so in the Middle East and the Caucasus, and because it was a better long term strategy to not invite the wrath of the two dominant religions.
