Hi Heather. In my opinion you did totally the right thing. I feel it's important in relationships that you don't compomise on the things that are deeply important to you. Some people can just "tune out" religious stuff and carry on the relationship as normal. But you sound similar to me in this regard, it would do my head in. I dated a religious girl before, thinking I could overlook this problem, and I couldn't. It was a disaster. Trying to ignore unresolvable problems like this to save a relationship is a bad idea.
Also, when it comes to having kids, deciding what to "teach" them is going to be a nightmare all round. So don't feel bad, you tried really hard to sit down and talk it through, to try and reach common ground. You gave him a chance to explain, and to listen to you, but his brainwashing is too strong to see the light. You did the right thing for both of you.
