16 bishops and archbishops in Mexico stand accused of the cover-up of sexual abuse by 250 priests
Quote:At least 16 bishops and archbishops, among them the exarchbishop emeritus of the Primate Archdiocese of Mexico, Norberto Rivera Carrera, and six that are still in operation in Mexican cities, have been accused of covering up priests accused of sexual abuse and child abuse, according to a report by the Bishop Accountability organization, which is dedicated to identifying cases of sexual assault within the Catholic Church.
The co-director of the association, Anne Barett Doyle, pointed this Thursday at a press conference that they have registered accusations against 250 priests in Mexico, which have been covered up by the current clerical leaders of the cities of Zamora, Irapuato, Culiacán, Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Piedras Negras and Tabasco.
The initial report published by the organization, and which it hopes to complement in the next three months, shows how these religious leaders silenced sexual abuse of minors in different churches or archdiocese under his charge, and have even intervened to prevent priests suffer consequences.
"There has been massive clerical abuse in Mexico, and thanks to the fact that it has been reported in the press, we are on these cases," said Anne Barett Doyle. "[ This list ] is just a start, but we have already identified other leaders who appear to have covered up sexual harassers".
The cited cases of cover-up include, for example, that the retired archbishop of San Luis Potosí, Jesús Carlos Cabrero Romero, forced the parents of a child who had been abused by Father Eduardo Córdova Bautista to sign a "declaration sworn by which they committed themselves under oath before God to keep secret and strict confidentiality the sexual crimes committed'".

teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"
