No one ever fantasizes about that grand moment in history where their ancestors civilizations were utterly crushed, do they..lol. Everyone's family line traces back to someone important. I guess no one is descended from the guy who cleans up horse shit.
(You're still better off now than you would have been then. The things that plague us the worst are not affected by social strata.)
Let's do a little thought experiment. Let's say that tomorrow morning you could wake up in a future that mirrors the past in culture and technology. Now we're not going back in time here, so your families social status then has no bearing now. Lines would need to be redrawn. Is this the sort of utopia you're expressing a longing for? We haven't piggybacked any modern conveniences in as an unsaid arrangement have we? There's a reason that the culture you're longing for is dead.
Personally, my family lost any knowledge of the specifics of their origins a long ways back when the less lawful among us decided to assume a name. We've been a part of the "American Thing" since the beginning. Still, I wouldn't trade places with any one of my ancestors, because even though they led "good lives" for the time, they were still completely inferior to the life I can lead in the here and now.

I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!
