If you ever go to southern Spain, you will learn a little history on this. Back in the 12-13 century, under Islam domination, Granada was a great center of learning when Muslims, Jews and Christians were free to live in peace and in the spirit of exchanging ideas. But this exploration in freedom was quickly destroyed not by christians or Jews but by Muslim fundamentalists who came from North Africa and were revulsed by this kind of freedom. They overthrew the rulers of Granada and instituted a type of Taliban-style society. Needless to say this came to a tragic end when this regime was later overthrown by Christians in the 15th century, and Muslims lost their foothold in that region of Europe. One of the most famous mosque is in Cordoba, a marvellous feat of architecture that symbolizes that period that once existed in Spain.
