Decline of Christianity (in England)

Decline of Christianity (in England)
Quote:The number of people who call themselves Christians in England and Wales has fallen by almost 10% in five years, an official survey suggests.

Theists, I eagerly await your No True Scotsman fallacies. I'm curious though. Would Jesus' followers argue that if Christianity dies off will the world, according to their deities' plan, end? Seeing how there's no point for any more people to be born since no one else can be saved? I wonder if the Muslims share that egocentricity too. Tongue

lol @ 70% Christian.

How many ever go to church? 5% tops is my estimate and i think i'm being very generous. They just say they're Christian because they get put on the spot. During the last census my mother in law asked what we are, so i asked her 'what are you?'. She looked perplexed and replied 'Christian?', so i asked 'do you belive in God or Jesus?' She said, 'no'. So i said either put Atheist or no religion.

It's convenient to say Christian even if you are not.

I think another poll put xtians at about 44% which seems more like it.

70% is embarrassingly high for a secular state like the UK. They must have selected most of the fuckwits.
You are currently experiencing a lucky and very brief window of awareness, sandwiched in between two periods of timeless and utter nothingness. So why not make the most of it, and stop wasting your life away trying to convince other people that there is something else? The reality is obvious.

The UK isn't secular.

Yeh we are a Christian nation run by a constitutional monarchy and th head of the monarchy is the head of church.

But we are quite secular for a religious nation, guess it's because we generally don't give two fucks, or just don't think about it.

Come on, no nation can be more secular than a christian nation that blurs the line between religion, government and carnival sideshow.

Regular Church attendance is down to about 10% according to the TearFund stats. The 'Christian tradition' we seem to adopt is quite laughable in a way.

The fall of Christendom is an interesting phenomenon. I think it has a lot to do with our changing understanding of religion's role in people's lives and the advent of universal human rights. The shift between modernism and postmodernism has been hard for the church as well, since the church has modeled itself around modernism since the reformation. Overall I look forward to the fall of Christendom and the Christendom ideal, because it has been so harmful, especially in recent years. I don't think that this will mean the end of Christianity, but we will definitely need to have another reformation. I think you can already see a dramatic paradigm shift with the Fresh Expressions movement in England, but who knows how much the church will change. I know most people on here have their fingers crossed for the church disappearing though. Smile

I have been thinking a lot recently about why countries and or cultures leave their faith. It seems that the ones that keep their faith the longest have historically had a less oppressive form of that religion.

What do you'all think?
I have studied the Bible and the theology behind Christianity for many years. I have been to many churches. I have walked the depth and the breadth of the religion and, as a result of this, I have a lot of bullshit to scrape off the bottom of my shoes. ~Ziploc Surprise
