In the US, even with Islam on the rise in black communities, the majority of black people are Christian, or at least claim to be. WHY?

The Bible clearly looks down on people of differing color and origin and even goes as far as to condone and even approve of beating and/or killing your slave should you so feel the need.

Christians are the MOST guilty of hauling Africans out of their homes, putting them in chains, beating them, raping them, separating them from their families and then going to church on Sunday and thanking their good Lord for those privileges.

I just have to ask .... Why THE FUCK would any black person kneel down and kiss the ass of a silken-haired nordic white jesus given the history of his most devout followers? It seems clear to me that Jesus' old man doesn't even like you and if he really exists - guess what, you'll probably be slaves to all the white people in Heaven too. Don't get mad at me for saying so ... it's your god who is a racist prick. I just want to know why the hell anyone would worship the one responsible for the unapologetic enslavement and mistreatment of your entire race.
Because, in essence, they have recreated Christianity in their own image, using it as a way of escaping the problems caused by racism. Perhaps notably, even I'm not the kind of person who likes to quote Marx, but this famous passage of Marx should explain it:

Religious suffering is, at one and the same time, the expression of real suffering and a protest against real suffering. Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people.

Odd. How can a religion that offers you no freedom and literally commands you to honor your masters be of comfort to such a person? I understand what Marx is trying to say, but I don't understand how it's actually possible to conceptualize it in one's own mind when you are the one suffering a very real life.

It's easy: take the parts you like and throw the rest out.

I just wanted to add a little humor to this thread. Big Grin

But on a more serious note, you spoke of slaves. The slaves themselves were xtians. That's actually where most gospel music comes from.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gospel_music

However, even as a half black person who's a former xtian, I for the life of me can't understand what their thinking either. Perhaps the modern day blacks just ignore the stuff in the bible about slavery and the history of what white xtians did to their ancestors ("Yeah, slavery was bad but it's over now"). In fact, one of the verses they like to prefer to is Matthew 20:16 "So the last shall be first and the first last: for many be called but few chosen". Imagine their reaction when Obama got elected. Dodgy

So, yeah. I'd say it's ignorance.
Don’t ask.

It was not until the late 19th century that Europeans could get into the interior of West Africa due to the prevalence of deadly diseases such as yellow fever and malaria.

True ... and even then, like now, racial cleansing takes place all through Africa often in the name of holiness and/or purity. Which only serves to bolster my point about religion being tied to race for all time. Something amkerboy can't seem to wrap his tiny mind around.

The debate here is not who has done more slavery. There's little doubt that slavery has been around since humans could string sentences together. My OP was not in regards to all this. My OP was, WHY would a black person born and raised in America, knowing what he knows about our history, worship a god that supports the racist white people that enslaved his entire race in this country?

Well it depends on how you interpret the bible, as I see it while the bible is racist (in particularly the old testament). However it's a sort of racism is many of us aren't familiar with.

The curse of Ham in the Old Testament was a way blackening the "Canaanites", because Canaan was Ham's son. Also Egypt because the Bible have them descended from Ham. The whole story of Lot's daughters committing incest with him was also another character assassination on the peoples of Moab and Ammon (which are protracted as having descended from these incestuous liaisons).

Trouble is Tristo, those good little jews of the bible were Canaanites. Their only claim to fame was not eating pork.

Hence the whole narrative which was constructed in the Torah to state that the Jews weren't descended from the Canaanites.

This is my understanding...elitism was rife and the whole "my god has a bigger dick than your god" is behind the abrahamic religions.

Of course this is the simplistic view I hold.
