I live in a more enlightened part of the Bible Belt (just north of Houston) But I know what you mean. I have a friend of mine who is a Christian who moved from a small redneck town in North Mississippi to a small redneck town in Central Mississippi. Even after 7 years she was still considered to be the foreigner and not fully accepted into the group. They can't handle different people there. Though Mississippi (and As I understand Arkansas as well) are worse than most places in the Bible belt, I imagine an atheist living wherever you live in the Bible Belt, you would have a lot of problems and it could seriously hurt your business.
I have studied the Bible and the theology behind Christianity for many years. I have been to many churches. I have walked the depth and the breadth of the religion and, as a result of this, I have a lot of bullshit to scrape off the bottom of my shoes. ~Ziploc Surprise

I expect this will be taken pretty well. Methodists in my experience seem not to let biblical literalism get in the way of decency, and atheism is becoming a less shocking admission these days.

The worst part is that I wouldn't have the support of family, since just about all of my family, in-laws included, are devout Catholics. Only support I would have would be from my atheist nephew.
Christian apologetics is the art of rolling a dog turd in sugar and selling it as a donut.

Conroe? or somewhere further north? Just out of curiosity.

I live in east Houston.

Just south of Tomball. BTW are you part of the Atheist meet up group? There's a large atheist meet up group in Houston. I think they might have a meet up location in Katy. If you like I think I can send you a link.

I used to be a funda mentalist Christian. In my gradual slide into atheism I decided to go to a Methodist church. It was refreshing not to have to deal with the literal interpretation of Genesis anymore and they are slightly tolerant of homosexuals. Not that I am a homosexual I just don't like it when they are discriminated against. I don't want to have to be a part of a group that does these things. It's one of the many things that bothered me when I was a fundie. I was a fundie because of a belief in god but I didn't like some of their bullshit attitudes and I would get my ass reamed when I said anything about it. There's a lot less ass reaming in the Methodist denomination.
