Never heard of it; send me the link. Interest officially piqued.

Not all meetup groups require an invite but this one does. I think they are trying to keep fundies from obnoxiously disturbing the meetings. First try this link, though I think It might block you. http://www.meetup.com/Houston-Atheists/?...wm1&ec=wm1

If that get's you nowhere try this one: http://www.meetup.com/find/?keywords=ath...Country=us

You will have to be approved, but approval is easy. This is not a clickish group they are just trying to stop Christian activism from disturbing things.

The groups meet up all over Houston. The organizer often goes to these meetings. You'll like her. A lot of these meetings are social meetings for adults but the organizer is trying to add in family activities. Along with the social meetings there are book discussion groups and invites to lectures. There is also a forum but I think this forum is better. The meetup group forum is very good about discussing local events and issues though. There are also one time events for example they had a solstice (meant as a joke not a worship event) campout. Another event is will be a protest against a witch hunter who is known for human rights violations in Nigeria. This person will be coming to preach her crap in March. That particular event is not just for atheists. Christians, pagans, wiccans etc plan on attending also, and are welcome. Oh, and I forgot, the group has chartered a few buses and will be going to the reason rally in Washington this spring. Only a portion of the atheists in Houston will be going to this. Money and time prevent most people from doing this.

Disclaimer: For those not in countries/regions where atheism is normal meetup groups with activities like I've mentioned may seem a bit odd. The function of the meetup group is to provide a safe haven for those who wish to be who they are -non believers, provide social interaction with like minded people, and (for former Christians) some sort of replacement for the family togetherness that church used to provide. These are just a few functions for the group. They make it easier to be an atheist in an area where atheism is not the norm.
I have studied the Bible and the theology behind Christianity for many years. I have been to many churches. I have walked the depth and the breadth of the religion and, as a result of this, I have a lot of bullshit to scrape off the bottom of my shoes. ~Ziploc Surprise
