Whilst I do not accept a single thing he was saying (or believing) I didn't see him as any more deluded or ignorant than the majority of Christians. The prime difference is that he was brave enough to stand up and shout about it. You've got to admire him for that but at the same time you've got to laugh in his face and publicly express sympathy to his poor downtrodden wife and children. I wish I'd been there.

No, the children obviously didn't want to be there. It may have been fun trying to chat them up in front of him - especially if you were gayCool Shades

What is to admire, when one brings a knife to a gun fight?
Seriously who irons their socks !!
Take a good look at the son towards the end, if that doesn't say "soon to be mass murderer or serial killer" I don't know what does.

Epimethean Wrote:Not necessarily. The fucktard in the video is not following Jesus' lead, so, even among the nominally "true" xtians, this guy comes up two slices short of a manna sammich.

Well, then I guess it all depends on how you define a Christian, which is the inevitable destination for this debate anyway. To me, if they believe Jesus got his ass nailed to a piece of wood to appease their god, they are a 'true' Christian whether or not they actually follow his teachings. I will say, however, that this guy is a total fucking twat who gives Christians a bad name.

No, I don't-any more than I would have had to admire Hitler or the guys who destroyed the WTC. That is exactly the behavior I have to NOT admire, in fact.

Why do you wish you had been there?

I admire anyone with the courage of their convictions. I certainly don't have to agree with someone to admire them. Hitler was one of the most evil people the world has ever known but the technical, engineering and scientific advances in the Third Reich were incredible. Part of those advances were due to the vision and direction of Hitler. If it had been under the dictatorship of a 'nice' person the world would still be full of admiration for Hitler. The fact that he proved to be mad and evil does not stop me admiring the amazing, good things that he acheived. American investment money came flooding into Germany when Hitler started to turn Germany around in such a spectacular fashion. Both the Bush family and the Kennedy family were high profile investors who admired him greatly so perhaps you will feel that I am in good company whatever your politics are.

I wish I was there because no one in the video managed to challenge the idiot in an effective way. I am conceited enough to think that maybe I could have done.

But he didn't bring a knife to a gun-fight did he. He came along armed only with words. His posse cowered behind him to emphasise that he was all alone and vastly outnumbered by his 'enemy'.

I do admire him in exactly the same way that I would admire you for doing the same sort of (atheist) thing outside a large Christian gathering or a Rangers fan standing alone outside a Celtic fan gathering and bad-mouthing Celtic (Insert team names of your choice).

"I admire anyone with the courage of their convictions."

We differ there. I can admire conviction when it is backed by sanity and reason and not motivated by desire for mass destruction. This has no such backing, and admiring Hitler for the engineering that came of his madness is misplaced admiration, when you should be admiring those who did the engineering rather than the madman who planned to employ such things solely to destroy a race. The fucknut in this video seems to be thrilled at his conceptualization of how everyone who is not of his brand of madness will suffer for their differences. That is insanity.

Perhaps it takes insanity to be a "true" xtian, but I hope not. The zealots are nearly always the worst expression of religious diseases.

If a man does 1,000 admirable things but 10 bad things, should we condemn him for his bad things and ignore the great good he has done? Should we admire the great things and ignore the bad?

I tend to admire the good things in people and deplore the bad; recognising that we are all flawed to one degree or another. Take 'Undeceived' for example. I think it's great that he comes here to help us poor lost souls even though people are very rude to the poor misguided man. I'm sure he does a lot of harm to his children etc but the poor guy is trying to do what he thinks is right and I admire him for it. That only seems fair and I hope the people who know me personally can overlook some of the silly things I have done and recognise that I am generally a decent, honest human being with a strong sense of fairness and concern for my fellow man. Maybe you feel the same way about yourself.

What about Hitler's favourite enemy? Churchill did some monumentally stupid things, wicked things, but he is very widely admired. Fairness is the way to go for me but I accept that it doesn't suit everyone.

As to what it takes to be a Christian, a psychiatrist will describe religion as a psychogenic illness - unless they happen to be suffering from it themselves.

Let's put your query into more pragmatic representation.

"If a man [unintentionally] does 1,000 admirable things but 10 bad things [which cost the lives and well-being of millions], should we condemn him for his bad things and ignore the great good he has done?"

YES

"Should we admire the great things and ignore the bad?"

We should admire those who actually did the good things-if their rationale extended beyond the hideously motivated demands of their demented dictator.

The joke here: This is not rocket science to comprehend.

Perhaps it would be better to admire the good things, rather than some figurehead we've attributed them too. Especially considering just how hard it is to single someone out as as having done this or that "great thing" all by their onesies.
(same for evil things, and with the caveat that when sole attribution is warranted admiration/revilement are due)
