Sorry for dragging up an old post, but being a new atheist, this is a hot topic for me!
I have recently found a lot of discrepancies in the 4 gospels on the simple subject of Jesus's crucifixion. Here's what I've found so far...
----
In Matthew, Mark, and John - Pilate's soldiers mock and dress Jesus
In Luke - it is Herod's men
----
In Matthew, Mark, and Luke - Simon of Cyrene carries Jesus' cross
In John - Jesus carries his own cross
----
In Matthew and Mark - both of the robbers also mock Jesus
In Luke - only one of the robbers mocks him, the other one stands up for him
----
In Matthew and Mark - women (including Mary Magdalene) observed from a distance
In John - women (including Mary Magdalene) were standing beside his cross
----
In Matthew and Mark - Jesus doesn't speak a word until right before dying
In Luke - Jesus spoke to the crowd and to the robbers
In John - Jesus spoke to his mother and a disciple, and he said, "I am thirsty."
----
In Matthew and Mark - his last words were "My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?"
In Luke - his last words were "Father, into your hands, I commit my spirit."
In John - his last words are "It is completed!"
----
In Matthew and Mark - the temple curtain tore in two right after Jesus died
In Luke - the temple curtain tore when darkness came, before his death
We are always taught the Bible is infallible, perfect, the very word of God. That is over a half-dozen differences over just one story. There is no way all 4 of those books are correct. They are either partially correct, or one or more of them are completely wrong!
Makes you wonder how many other authors of the Bible made mistakes....
