Respect towards religious people
|
I didn't vote because it's hard for me to come up with the best answer that fits my views. I will just say that I show as much respect to religious people for their beliefs as they show me for mine. And here lately I don't feel very respected.
Christian apologetics is the art of rolling a dog turd in sugar and selling it as a donut.
I am guilty of instantly thinking less of someone when I find out they believe in god, however I do expect it of most people. As you're all fully aware, the majority of the religious community is ignorant and I have a hard time respecting someone who doesn't even understand evolution and big bang theory, let alone all faucets of their own religion.

My answer would be along the lines of a. I can respect anyone who is worthy of respect, and, b. professing a belief in the absurd is a surefire way to lose respect. There have been exceptions but they are few and far between.
I don't even expect them to respect my beliefs, but it'd be nice if they at least respected my right to have my beliefs.

I have no respect for the religious part of all religious people. How much respect I might have for them overall depends on how much of them is left when religious part is discounted, and what those other parts consist of.
It's not really practical to judge people based on their religious views. So many people are just brought up to believe in God, in the U.S., to be Christian, that if you said you disrespected all religious people you'd be talking about 80-90% of the world or something like that.

Quote:It's not really practical to judge people based on their religious views Me neither; I judge people on their behaviour. I'm perfectly capable respecting the person if not their views. Not my fault if the vast majority of the very worst dropkicks, drongos, dills, and common-or-garden-variety arseholes I run across are ALSO religious. I have long believed they would be pretty much the same regardless of their beliefs. I mean, I haven't always been a atheist but I HAVE always been a bit of a cunt. OK,when I was a was a believer I was also an insufferable little prig. Yep...approximately 99% of the total world population should be shot for sheer stupidity and the world just MAY be a better place "The Universe is run by the complex interweaving of three elements: energy, matter, and enlightened self-interest."
