Idea For A Story

Set in the future religion has caused a nuclear war or some apocalypse that has wiped out nearly all of humanity and Earth is a nuclear wasteland.
Some humans have invented time travel and endeavour to alter the course of history at some critical point to prevent the influence of religion on society.
They pinpoint several individuals at key points in history who were all killed but might have prevented the course of history had they lived.
But they only have limited power and can only save one of them and hope that this person will change history and bring in the Enlightenment against religion.
What do you think of this idea for a story?

Interesting idea.
Generally if governments want to avert a course of action they go looking for someone to kill, not someone to save. I doubt time travel would change this.
How do they pinpoint these individuals? What measure do they invoke to say they would if they lived, individually have a demonstrable effect on averting human disaster?
My only real critique is that is would be hard to argue that one person could have had such an effect and more importantly, how are you dealing with the paradox that if they managed to do so, they wouldn't have sent someone in the first place.

With regards to time-travelling plots wouldn't it be awesome to have a film where a cult from the future alters history and helps the USA win a particular war or conflict they weren't supposed to.
Now the movie's protagonist must travel back in time and ensure America loses the skirmish lest the *entire Universe* implodes from an irreparable time paradox while the patriotic fools continue blindly toward their destruction. 
Nah, fuck it, we'll just make another movie about talking fucking penguins, because we clearly haven't had enough of those.

Twelve Monkeys (La Jetee)/"Some other story I read or watched long ago that I can't remember the name of somebody help me".
It's generally fun narrative, plenty of room for twists.
(or the paradox of the future they are sent from being a product of the past that they were sent back to in the first place, multiple timelines and alternative realities ftw! It's a good thing that sci-fi doesn't have to be rock solid, you need only supply the reader with the ability to suspend disbelief for the duration of the story.)

You'll have to go back in time to fix the paradox that your last trip back in time caused...which, of course, causes another paradox.
It's paradoxes all the way down.
The story idea is okay. Luckily for you, it isn't great. If it was great, I'd steal the idea and sell it to Hollywood.

Most time travel films just have paradoxes and don't really make sense if you look at them logically
