I have never seen Zeitgeist so I am unable to comment. The concept of the birth and death of the sun/ Solar year, that was so central to survival in pre-industrial societies, does seem plausible. What is also plausible is that such a belief would be near nigh impossible to eradicate and so was subverted by the dominant culture/ ruler of the time period.
