One always has to consider that things a politician says during an election cycle are a reflection of his desire to garner votes rather than a true reflection of his personal convictions. This phenomenon occurs across all types of politicians and should be considered endemic to the species.

The man picks and chooses his words like a boss, I must say. And I notice his "stance" has changed quite a bit to garner the votes from the independent-republicans since they're a bit more numerous than the indie-libs in this country.

Watch as he magically has a change of heart and turns against the Drug War and goes back to support gay marriage the moment he gets re-elected.

The rhetoric is just that. Rhetoric. His actions speak louder than his words and his pro-gay endorsements in the past can't be tarnished just because he's working the media game. He's just trying to do TOO much. He wants his critics to shut up and quit whining. Obama suffers from a delusion that everyone can love him. They can't. He needs to just tough it up and get to work and he'll do just fine.

Obama suffers from a delusion that everyone can love him.

I think he feels that as the first African American president he has a responsibility to be as broadly pleasing as possible.

Seriously, he's going to couch his words in such a way so as to gain as many / lose as few votes as possible while not completely alienating his base.

So, why did he only support civil unions in 2008? If he wanted to get the gay votes, why not just say he support same-sex marriage then? We know that Joe Biden doesn't operate from much of a script, so I just think Obama was kind of forced to take a stand on the issue after Biden, and since Biden obviously came out in favor of equality, Obama wants to come off as being in agreement with his vice president and vice versa. It may have been a completely calculated political move on Obama's part, but I'm just saying that may be one reason for the switch.
