It's true that a major portion will hate him no matter what, but I think that he is more concerned how history views his presedency and not the bigots in the present. He doesn't want the first black president to go down as extremely divisive. The irony of the situation is that the major portion that hates him no matter what will see his skin color as an extremely divisive factor even if he fulfilled their every wish.

It is even worse if history views the first black president as lame pussy.
positive-leaning, educated, black folk tend to overcompensate as easy-going (lame pussy), to overcome the stereotype of being aggressive, angry or threatening as seen in the media. that's why a lot of narrow-minded blacks are pissed at obama for not doing more for them/us. it is my impression (rightly or wrongly) that he is trying to help americans as a whole and this will improve everyone's position in life. it's not about helping one group over another, that's what has us in the position we're in now. also, somewhere in there is the thought that "let me show my ass in here and there will never be another one of us in here for the next 200yrs."
