Parents freak out when their child announces he's an atheist

RE: Parents freak out when their child announces he's an atheist
I came out to my mother during a church service when I was 11. Other than saying she didn't think it was an appropriate time, nothing changed. Even better, she became an atheist (of sorts) a few years later.

I am very envious of those of you who have parents that accepted your lack of belief and even joined you in it.

I think it is up to the person. If they want to say something, they should. If everyone stopped themselves from doing something for fear of backlash, we would all be walking clones. This kid is having to deal with a lot, but at least he's not lying about what he thinks. He'll eventually be old enough to stand on his own two feet and he will know who his parents really are when he gets there. That's not a bad thing.

Oh, I wasn't questioning the advice, I was just saying, "Really?" as in, "You were really in that first thread the kid linked?"

I am lucky most if not all of my family members are Atheists. But that is fucked up.

It looks like he's deleted his Reddit account, too.

I feel very fortunate to live in an atheist household, if I came home parading around as a Christian, then I'd get into trouble. Tongue

Yeah, his parents sound like the typical hard-line religious dicks that infest America lately.

Yeah, fuck them and their intolerance.

Either his parents found the link or the kid was afraid they would and he deleted it. I feel bad for him, because after the initial shock of me telling my parents I don't believe in god and a short debate on his existence, I was never forced to go to church again. In fact, we didn't even talk about it until I brought it up some 16 years later.

My mom and dad definitely had their faults(who doesn't?), but I was damn lucky to have them as parents. I hope to be as good as they were.
