Does the Bible promote slavery?

RE: Does the Bible promote slavery?
Quote:Sounds like forcing slaves to obey to me. "You can go free, but you must leave your wife/children behind, they're stuck with me."

This is more evidence that the OT servants had a CHOICE whether or not to obey. Thus not being FORCED.

There is no evidence that the servants in the OT were forced to obey their masters and evidence for suggesting otherwise that I will not repeat, rather you can go back and look at it for yourself.

This proves you did not read my argument.

Oh please...

Your idea that anyone would pay money for a slave, then not expect them to obey them is pretty ridiculous.

That is your assumption and it is a completely perfect example of a non-sequitur to suggest that you cannot buy someone without forcing them to obey you. You need to provide evidence for this claim, not expect us to blindly believe you.

As annoying as Chris could be as an administrator he sure as hell nailed your sorry ass.

Quote: Slavery in the Bible

Except for murder, slavery has got to be one of the most immoral things a person can do. Yet slavery is rampant throughout the Bible in both the Old and New Testaments. The Bible clearly approves of slavery in many passages, and it goes so far as to tell how to obtain slaves, how hard you can beat them, and when you can have sex with the female slaves.

Many Jews and Christians will try to ignore the moral problems of slavery by saying that these slaves were actually servants or indentured servants. Many translations of the Bible use the word "servant", "bondservant", or "manservant" instead of "slave" to make the Bible seem less immoral than it really is. While many slaves may have worked as household servants, that doesn't mean that they were not slaves who were bought, sold, and treated worse than livestock.

Got to give you this one, Chris. They do keep proving you right.

They had a choice?

The men had to stay with their masters for a certain number of years= NO CHOICE

They couldn't take their wives or children when they were set free= NO CHOICE

The women and children had to stay behind= NO CHOICE

And should they DISOBEY you could righteously beat them within inches of their lives.

Either you're totally fucking stupid, or completely amoral... possibly both.

Why did your supposed savior say nothing about slavery? Slipped his mind? Unimportant?

You're the one making the claim that slavery did not include obeying owners. It is up to you to provide the evidence that people owned slaves but did order them to obey.

Especially considering this -

Slaves, obey your earthly masters with deep respect and fear. Serve them sincerely as you would serve Christ. (Ephesians 6:5)

You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.

Ah yes, when at a complete loss, pull out the biased sources. Thanks for showing how much of a non-freethinker you are.

Quote:The men had to stay with their masters for a certain number of years

They signed contracts to work for a certain number of years = CHOICE. More proof of your inadequate knowledge of the subject.

Quote:Slaves, obey your earthly masters with deep respect and fear. Serve them sincerely as you would serve Christ. (Ephesians 6:5)

And those who take the advice, are CHOOSING to do so. This shows more so that servants were not obeying their masters since they need the disciples of the son of God to suggest to them that they should.

More evidence on my side, less on yours thanks.

No, you have made the claim that slavery is in the Bible and it is up to you to provide evidence that both conditions for slavery are met.

I can't work out if you're being deliberately disingenuous, are a troll,or really as stupid as you come across. Of course it's academic to me; I don't suffer fools, and you certainly fit the job description.

RE: Does the Bible promote slavery?
This is fucking disgusting. You call them servants, and by doing so, you shit on all those people who actually lived and died as real slaves. Do you know how horrible that is?

You've still not addressed the beatings, the condoned rape, etc.

Why did they beat their slaves?

If they weren't required to be submissive, just as your bible says they are, then why would they've been beaten? Sport? Maybe they were beaten when they did obey?

Tell us.

Why does the bible give instructions for beating slaves?

According to the bible, it's okay to beat slaves as long as you didn't kill them. This means that your god condones beating slaves, correct?

Don't worry, this beating will help you DECIDE for yourself
whether or not you want to obey your master.

Da Daa Daaaa!

Here I am to come to 'his aid!'

Welcome to AF and if I may argue the facts, don't let them turn the topic personal or they will sift and weigh you quickly. for most of their areguements are based on finding personal faults. (you should ask someone to list mine) On an indepth topic like this one you might want to fore go any english interpertation (KJV) or any other and differ to the Hebrew or Greek. (At least now the majority of them know it exists, and will accept a reading from it.)
This will be a baptism of fire and rightfully so, for you have entered the flame of your own accord, and all superfical religious nonsense will be burned quickly away, exposing your heart and true intentions. the question will be is what will you do with what has been revealed? Will you change what needs to change to serve God or will your pride have the last word? Things you need to consider before you continue down this road.

Eitherway Welcome again to Atheist Forums and good Luck!!!
