Fuck you. Don't you dare suppose to tell me what I think. I've made my reasons clear, as did RD. This has nothing about people doing well; this has everything to do with people who are not doing well (y'know, the people starving on the streets who the games will not do anything for).

fuck you too! i actually wasn't talking about you or rd in that point, there are always a ton of links about the damn olympics in the last week and even before that, it's always like athletes are dumb and the sports are useless. my point was more to being tired of some smart-people superiority issue.

now, i will say whatever the fuck i think. yeah you do make your point clear - you feel like ron paul removing minimum wage will help poor. yeah that shows how much you care about "poor people" here. gtfoh!

if you care so much about the ones in the street starving, go take them something ... or don't, yet still knock people for trying to things to expand the country's position in the world.

It would help the poor. Eliminating minimum wage enables small business to offer more jobs to workers. There are people out there who are earning less than minimum wage already...we call them "unemployed". You think they would prefer to earn nothing rather than a $1 an hour job?

I do take them something. I'm just one person; I want the government to do something about it too. They spent 9 billion on an event in which some of the wealthiest athletes in the world compete for shiny things. Ultimately, knowing who is the fastest person in the world is irrelevant when there are people in the world with nothing to eat.

The main thing I don't like is this whole team mentality. I think they should celebrate the individuals a bit more rather than saying "this country got X amount of medals". You have fat slobs sitting watching it saying "yeah, we are awesome!"... or at least that is the impression I have gotten for the past few years of watching the preparations for it.

I also heard a while ago that the Olympics can benefit a country economically for up to 10 years after hosting it... it was something I read when in an economics class when I was studying business at uni. I can't remember what the source was though... I'll try to dig it up.

i can't really believe you don't see how wrong this is. it's like going to eat at a 4-star restaurant and tipping the server $1 for her time, when an appropriate tip may be $20. considering their salary is partially reduced below minwage since they're expected to get tips. it's completely rude and doesn't do anything for the economy, it makes another disgruntled employee who is gone all day (at work) yet can't afford the bus pass that would take him there daily. it could spin off into tons of bad things, besides workplace morale and criminality to get more money to survive properly. if you're on welfare here, you're doing much better than someone who would make less than minwage - so why bother working? you could sit home on your hump and make money.

ok man. they're not competing for the shiny things as much as the status that they're the recognized best in the world at what they do. btw, if shiny medals are so bad, why do we use them for posts and years? lol.

i won't try to defend them anymore, i assumed this lot was supposed to be an open-minded crew - don't knock people based on their race, the sexuality, etc... except the athletes, they're just dumb! ok, i've lost interest. i like the damn olympics and appreciate the work they put in to be the best.

you win!

I watched the opening last night expecting it to be crap... but I was actualy impressed, well done to everyone involved.
As for the actual running about, jumping and splashing part I have no interest at all. It may bring money and visitors to the country but from my point of view the fact that one person is a millisecond faster than the other makes no difference to my life at all. People have said that winning a gold gives pride in a country, but your country is purely an accident of birth.

At the risk of echoing an unpopular opinion, I honestly couldn't give two wet farts for the Olympics. Not because of principles such as the spiralling cost to host the thing at the expense of more essential areas, or the prices being charged for tickets and concomitant services such as hotels, catering etc, or what the privilege of hosting the games will do for the country's morale. Put simply, there are two things that bore me shitless. One is an enforced jingoistic national event, particularly but not exclusively with the word "royal" in it. The second is sports. Either of those on their own will guarantee my total disinterest; so you can just imagine what combining them does.

Also I fully understand the purpose of the games, it's all about the prestige and the taking part. Well, good luck to them. It's a noble endeavour, I'm sure. I just don't want to see it, thank you. I have the internet and a lot of DVDs, I can fill up a fortnight without the blanket TV coverage of a glorified school sports day.

If this makes me closed minded, then I'm closed minded. I'm not bitter, I'm not angry, I'm not even mildly dyspeptic; I just have a different opinion. Best get used to it I'm afraid - I'm told there's a lot of it going around.

It must take a hell of a lot of effort to be such a miserable git. Why not lighten up and enjoy life?

Nobody is making you wYch the Olympics, are they, there are hundreds of TV channels bit showing the gs men's and millions of websites not relating to the games. Just ignore them and let everyone else enjoy the fun.

What part of "I'm not bitter, I'm not angry, I'm not even mildly dyspeptic; I just have a different opinion" did you miss? I just don't enjoy sports that's all. You obviously do and I'm not even thinking about trying to stop you from enjoying any fun you like, even if I had the power to do so. Like I said I have my opinions on the subject just like you have yours. I do not and will not denigrate your opinions nor your right to have them, let alone make condescending extrapolations on your attitude to life in general - why not show me the same sort of consideration?

So, let's just make this clear, those of us who enjoy sports can extol their values and be indignant at any rebuttal. Those who do not enjoy them are miserable, ignorant assholes. Am I getting this right?
