A Real and Significant Biblical Contradiction?
August 3, 2012 at 7:07 am
(This post was last modified: August 3, 2012 at 7:09 am by spockrates.)
I want to thank everyone for participating in the previous discussion. The contradictions suggested in that thread seemed to be either insignificant (e.g., translation errors, such as misspelling a name or a number) or contradictions between interpretations of unclear texts (e.g., comparing a Catholic interpretation of one verse with a contrary Protestant interpretation of another verse).
I have, however found a contradiction between two passages of the Bible, which seem to be both genuine (e.g., not unclear and susceptible to conflicting interpretations) and significant (e.g., not based on a trivial matter, such as a misspelling of a word).
Would anyone care to investigate the apparent (perhaps real?) contradiction I've discovered?

Ezekiel 14:9: And if the prophet be deceived when he hath spoken a thing, I the Lord have deceived that prophet, and I will stretch out my hand upon him, and will destroy him from the midst of my people Israel.
Where's the rest of it?

Hi Zen. How've you been? Here they are:
And if the prophet be deceived when he hath spoken a thing, I the Lord have deceived that prophet, and I will stretch out my hand upon him, and will destroy him from the midst of my people Israel.
(Ezekiel 14:9)
That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us.

God is caught telling dirty fibs almost from the beginning....
Quote:Gen2:17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.
Yet Adam and Eve do not die on that day and Adam is recorded to have lived to over 900 years old.

If death were a process, rather than an event, would the assertion of Genesis 2 still be untrue?
But please tell me: What do you think of the supposed contradiction I've mentioned?

Well spotted there young vulcan. And more evidence for the conclusion that the bible is just a collection of unrelated myths.
Death BTW is not a process, it is the end of a process, namely life.

Why are Biblical contradictions so high in your list of "Things that deserve discussion"?
I'm not saying that the numerous contradictions don't warrant some kind of revealing, but why aren't the more... well... magical things in the Bible more appealing to you? Talking about how a magic God magically spoke to a prophet and deceived him contradicts how said magical being couldn't lie seems to be a bit out of focus. Shouldn't the first questions be "Is historical proof solid enough to show that magic occurred" or "Can it be said that God did anything at all in this series of events"?
My conclusion is that there is no reason to believe any of the dogmas of traditional theology and, further, that there is no reason to wish that they were true.
Man, in so far as he is not subject to natural forces, is free to work out his own destiny. The responsibility is his, and so is the opportunity.

They're not high in my list, but the OP was on contradictions.
I'm well aware that the bible is a rich field of study when it comes to bullshit.
The contradictions being just one small part of the whole.
