Why do Christians sound stupid?

It's hard to construct this without falling into the very trap I'm attempting to describe, but in my experience atheists and similar non-believers have a tendency not to make sweeping generalisations. Quite what that may say about intelligence I have no idea and less desire to speculate.

I have to wonder if there may be some selection or confirmation bias at play...

I have noticed a fair number of sweeping generalizations from both side of the fence, and in my estimation it's a common human characteristic. I've noticed it here and elsewhere, and suspect that I do it as well though I try to avoid it.

It seems to me that it's easier to notice when another makes a generalization about a group you identify with, and less so when another who one identifies with makes such a generalization about someone (or a group) who is quite different.

Probably quite right, I'm no saint when it comes to such things myself. It's all too easy on the internet to fall into the trap of tarring all of a particular group with the brush used on the more obviously vocal elements. As I tend to encounter the burblings of the likes of NephilimFree, VenomFangX, Ian Juby etc it can be hard to readjust to the more mainstream, moderate believers.

I think it can be gleaned from various of my comments here that I consider everyone to be different and unique, even when they cluster together in little enclaves for mutual support or whatever. Personally I would hope not to make a statement along the lines of "[Atheists] basically repeat the same few fallacies they read off some blog, which do not hold up to academic scrutiny at the middle school level", not only because lying is a sin but also it's one of those generalisations I mentioned.

As in closer to 100%, you mean? And I say this neither knowing nor caring who Paul Ryan is. Wasn't there a film about his daughter?

I never wonder about it..... although given the reasoning capabilities of the ones who show up here it does seem to be true.

A skeptic,I understand that logic and reason do not guarantee truth. An argument may be logically valid but the inference untrue. (day one,Logic 101) I reject the so -called neo Platonist position,argued by people such as Aquinas and Augustine ,that god can be argued into or out of existence . I demand proof.

Well maybe you should re-read where I differentiated between unbelievers and Atheists, comparing the latter to Fundies.
