Why Can't others See?

I have got to say that I ponder that question many times myself. I tend to believe that many people who say they are christian don't give it too much thought outside of church. It seems to me that people take exactly what they want from religion--no more--no less.
As for scientists, doctors, etc--I can't imagine how they could get through their schooling and not question--but then, most of us were taught at one time or another that we are not to question the mysteries of God. Since no one can know for sure, maybe some are just too afraid to doubt or question. Just in case there is a hell---well-- I know one intelligent person who calls herself a christian, yet she believes in reincarnation. Talk about covering all the bases. She also wondered how I could not worry where my soul went after I died. Somehow, I don't think intellect has much to do with christianity.
Watching last night's 9/11 stuff with my wife I mentioned the firefighters on their way to the second tower which then collapsed (they never reached it) ... I said I bet they felt lucky. She said she didn't believe in god or anything but that that surely must make anyone feel spiritual, that there was a divine something (a higher power) watching over them or ... well ... just something. I said no, I would just feel lucky (albeit VERY lucky but lucky all the same) and explained that humanism was a philosophy, a way of life, a way of thinking about things and once you get to think that way you simply DO NOT entertain seriously any such ideas of higher powers, ghost, goblins, ghouls, faeries, leprechauns, Santa Claus or gods ... they are all EXACTLY the same thing and I could no more stop myself thinking like that that I could cut my own leg off (in fact I suspect the latter might be easier).

 Yeah I just thought ppl must just've felt fortunate/ a huge sense of relief/ huge sadness at the horror of it. 
Perhaps you're casting too big a net here. Try finding even one modern day philosopher of world renown that believes in a personal god that answers prayer. I don't think you can.
As far as intellectuals and scientists are concerned they are not far behind. A poll of the National Academy's members revealed that 93% did not believe in a personal god that answers prayer. And it is a statistical fact that the more educated a person becomes the less likely they are to believe in a personal god that answers prayer. So, in reality, religious stupidity runs mostly among the brainwashed, dumbed down, gullible masses.
