Physicists show bias against female job applicants

RE: Physicists show bias against female job applicants
It is blatant when it is identified. It is just a bias, when we just see the affects.

William Osborne not good enough how about Princeton then?

The same reason why Chick-Fil-A can continue -- their core demographic who they care very, very much for, in the end run, did not care what the myriad others who'd buy from CFA once and never again.

Nothing deeper than that.

To put in fashion speak, you can't make a modern shoe fit when the audience insists on it being from the 15th century.

If anything, the fossils who are most valued by the philharmonic have the final say.

Also, you're conflating a microcosm to the generic, all encompassing wide-spread issue outlined in preceding posts. In other words, it doesn't fit.

William Osborne's personal views do not scientific study make.

I love the implication in this that the Viennese are a primitive 15 century people, Oh yes we Europeans are not as advanced as you upright citizens, no bias there is there?

Its because they're not interested.

http://www.livescience.com/19439-women-p...ation.html

Women can do anything men can do, but if they have no passion to pursue careers in physics, then they won't, quite simply. Same goes for everything else in life.

Seriously how many girls did you lot know, for example, wanted to play chess in school? None that I knew.

But rather it's based upon the average women in that field. Besides it all depends on the persons interest, commitment, and passion. To be truth full if you had 100 men and 100 women who were all just as passionate about physics I'm sure it would be about dead even in their capabilities other than the fact women have better communication skills and work together better. :p

I grew up with two sisters. You couldn't be more wrong.

But thanks for the sexism. It is nice to know that my primitive male anatomy prevents me from effectively communicating. I guess that extra X-chromosome really changes things, huh?

First off, YOU linked an opinion piece by William Osborne.

Said opinion piece dealt with a organization rejecting applicants over aesthetics, not ability.

WHO funds this organization?

Do they care?

If you can't answer the last two, then what fucking hope do you have of effecting change?

It's like you can't even understand basic human nature and the economics that fund it.

And where did I say that?

^ THIS is why I hate my fellow "liberals". They seek offense as if it trumps an argument. ^

1. The organization in question is rejecting applicants out of some notion of appearance (race, gender, etc).

2. The organization, like Chick-Fil-A, has a defined audience who empowers them in some way

3. Said audience is in a position to effect change.

4. If said audience does not care, then change will not occur or not stick with time.

Also, JON, the organization is private.

They're free to discriminate as they see fit.

If their supporters find this repugnant, then they'll change or die.

As to your accusation of "15th Century", I grabbed a random numeric and applied it to modern fashion.

Had I said "1990's shoe", you probably would've accused me of something else.

@Moros Synackaon

What on earth are you going on about?
Didn't you like me saying that bias is more general than just what is happening in academic science, and giving two examples of it?

Are you saying I should not give particular examples, but you can talk about your sister?

But I accept your apology for gabbing a random numeric which you now admit did not mean anything.

I think women are allot smarter and better than men in many area's. Maybe it is sexism, but from the women around me they haven't been offended yet just men. Man *Hey that's sexism women are not better than us!* I'm allowed to have whatever opinion I want.

It's kinda funny I mentioned the communication skills and working together. It's not like you can say women are just as physically strong as us, Indeed they can be and surpass with intensive workouts.

An interesting question, have any women on AF been offended by me in any ways? Only women answer. Tongue

When I was growing up, I found myself far more interested in stereotypically "male" activities. I quickly realized I was in the minority. I was often ostracized for liking video games, heavy rock music and generally having a male circle of friends.

That being said, women are statistically less likely to go into hard maths and sciences. I submit it's a sociological phenomenon; it's the effect of conditioning our girls with their expected gender roles. This doesn't mean that they are less or more capable in the fields. It only means that likely due to sociological factors, women are less likely to be interested in the subjects.

I think I would value your compliments much more if they were not centered around my gender. I prefer to be evaluated as an individual, not a woman.

No, I didn't like your conflation of the activities of a privately held organization (of which serves an audience that clearly endorses various -isms) and the larger, unrelated issue of women in the sciences.

Your conflation and confusion of disparate issues muddies up the primary topic.

Show me something other than a study that screams "bias!" with some meaningful conclusions (as to how and why) than simply using said study and implying that the males are simply sexist.

I often find when looking at a problem, it can be quite illuminating to try to look at it from a different angle, and to look for similar situations.

Actually that is not my position at all, I think there are all sorts of variables, which affect how groups of people are perceived, which then has implications for individuals in that group. And I would add the person with such a bias is often not even be aware of it. Just encase here is another study on impartiality-

I am taken aback, at your unexpected and kind offer of sexual congress, but due to prior engagements I am afraid I will not be able to join with you, please do not take this personally. You should not take this rejection, as being because of anything to do with your person, I am sure you are a fine individual, and you will find the right person for you one day.
Love and kisses Jonb
