Sara Ege used a stick to beat seven-year-old Yaseen “like a dog” if he couldn’t recite passages from the Islamic text.
The beatings were so brutal that the boy died from his injuries, and his mother tried to burn the body to destroy the evidence, Cardiff Crown Court was told.
Yaseen was originally thought to have died in the house fire. But a post-mortem examination showed Mrs Ege had been beating and abusing her little boy in the months leading up to his murder.
In a video recording of her interview with police, Mrs Ege told them: “I was trying to teach him the Koran.
“I was getting more and more frustrated. If he didn’t read it properly I would be very angry — I would hit him.
“We had a high target. I wanted him to learn 35 pages in three months.
“I promised him a new bike if he could do it. But Yaseen wasn’t very good — after a year of practice he had only learnt a chapter.”
The court heard Mrs Ege, 32, a university graduate, and her husband, Yousuf, had enrolled Yaseen in advanced classes at their local mosque.
They wanted him to become a hafiz — an Islamic term for someone who memorises the Koran.
Yaseen was coming to the end of a three-month trial period at the mosque, and Ege was keen for him to impress his Imam.
Mrs Ege told officers: “I was getting all this bad stuff in my head, like I couldn’t concentrate, I was getting angry too much, I would shout at Yaseen all the time.”
She also hit him with a hammer, a rolling pin and a slipper, as well as repeatedly punching him, the court heard.
She would allegedly lock him in the shed, tie him to a door, and force him to do press-ups.
In the months after Yaseen’s death, Mrs Ege told a doctor she been told to kill him by Shaitan — an Islamic name for the devil, the court was told.
She said: “I have become so harsh, I even killed my own son.”
Her husband, 38, denies causing or allowing the death of a child by not stopping the beatings.
The trial continues.

That's awful... it's crazy to expect an average 7 year old to read and memorize any text, not just a religious one. But to beat them for not learning "fast enough" that's just sick.

While beautifully written, Islamic texts are often obscure. The Arabic language was born as a written language with the Koran, and growing evidence suggests that many of the words were Syriac or Aramaic.

Specifically, the Koran says martyrs going to heaven will get “hur,” and the word was taken by early commentators to mean “virgins,” hence those 72 concubines. But in Aramaic, hur actually meant “white” and was commonly used to specifically mean “white grapes.”

The exact number of virgins (or raisins) is not specified in Koran, but the number 72 comes from a quotation of Muhammad recorded in one of the lesser-known Hadith. ("Hadith" is an Arabic word meaning traditions.) After Muhammad's death, several collections of his deeds and sayings were collected to form the Hadith, which is the second most authoritative document is Islam, after the Koran.

If you told a Christian scholar that Jesus didn’t actually write the bible, but that it is a collection of eclectic texts from a wide variety of ancient writings spanning centuries that were somewhat randomly compiled into the Bible as we know it today, after much debate and bickering at the Council of Nicene, and they’ll probably nod their head in agreement. Most Christian scholars have finally come to grips with the fact that their Holy Book was written by a lot of different authors with differing religious opinions and interpretations, however inspired those men may have been. However, tell a devout Muslim that Mohammed may not have actually written every word of the Koran straight from the mouth of the angel Gabriel…and well, you’re asking for trouble.

Most Muslims do not actually believe in this 72 virgin thing because that is only found in a weak hadith, with a single narrator, and it's not even a significant issue for Muslims even if that is true. There are some non-Muslims who will mention this hadith in their articles/websites only to to mock and ridicule our faith (such as the one in your link) as if we believe in the 72 virgins hadith, when actually we don't. They also oftentimes quote verses from the Quran and Hadiths out of context in an attempt to show everyone that suicide is encouraged in Islam because of the "72 virgins," even though that goes against the Quran, as evident in the following verse which says:

"And do not kill yourselves, for Allah is merciful with you. And whosoever does that (kills self) with aggression and inequity, we will make them suffer in Hell fire, and this is easy for Allah to do." (4:29-30)

Well, that was certainly not necessarily, and I think that was brutal and evil.

Nothing in the Islamic books tell us to hurt a child just for not being able to learn/memorize the Quran (let alone kill them for it).

And back to the original subject...well what can you say apart from that the parents of this child were mentally ill? Religion was a catalyst for their illness on this occasion, and this is why religion must be eradicated.

It comes from a hadith, but we are not required to believe in it, because the hadith is not considered to be an authentic narration.

Even if the hadith is true, we believe that both men and women, in Paradise, will have immense rewards that are far greater than virgins, and cannot be described in words alone.
