Law-Abiding Responsible Gun Owner.
This is a title given only at death. If a gun owner manages to get through his entire life without one of his guns shooting himself or some innocent bystander he can claim this title with his last breath. Until then, every gun owner is a potential accident/crime waiting to happen.
Another kid shot. By another kid.

I don't know. It seems as if everyday there are examples of fuck-ups by LARGOs thus removing them from the ranks. IT's like we didn't know how many people were being executed by the cops until people started paying attention.
Today's example:

It does seem that way, eh? The guns aren't new, though, they've been with us for a long time. The phenomena of "accidental discharges" however, is quite new. Used to be they'd string your ass up for offering such a flimsy excuse on principle alone. "It just went off" was tantamount to an admission of guilt.
There are just so many of us (gun owners) that there would need to be a truly concerted effort made to change that majority's well established and well maintained record of safety....and if those non-largos were much for concerted effort, perhaps their firearms wouldn't be "going off" all the time?

Let's remember that the only ones we are even remotely likely to hear about are the ones where some asswipe shoots himself, someone else, or (minimally) sends a "freedom missile" into someone's house. We can only speculate on the number of times that the bullet lands harmlessly after an "accidental" discharge.

If a bullet lands harmlessly after an accidental discharge that would be an example of responsible gun ownership.......that's what's supposed to happen in an AD. We're supposed to handle our firearms in such a manner that in the unlikely event of an AD, no one gets hurt. Even in the much more common ND scenario (likely what you have in mind) proper handling nullifies that momentary lapse. A responsible gun owner need no more avoid these than a responsible driver needs to avoid a parking ticket to be called as such. It takes more than just an AD or an ND to remove a person from the LARGO running pool.
Alot, alot...has to go wrong before someone gets "accidentally shot". That we abbreviate it in conversational terms is misleading. Take a look at the gentleman from Owls Head above: Subject is transporting a loaded, unsecured firearm in the cab of a vehicle carrying passengers, that either didn't have a safety mechanism or didn't have the safety mechanism engaged. Subject then picks guns up said firearm -with the business end pointing at his gut- and then, let's call it like it is...Subject pulls the trigger. Where is the accident in any of this? It doesn't seem to have "just happened" by any sensible definition.

The gun not going off "accidentally" in the first place seems to be a far more desirable scenario. It takes all the guess work out of wondering where the bullet went. |
