In a 'normal union' in Biblical times, women were essentially property owned by either father or husband. Daughters were traded for goods and livestock.

I love your rationalizing the bible Christian. I'm totally on board with that part of the Bible too. When I use to date I would make sure to try to go out with christian gals and throw this verse at them if they got just a little too "independent."
