Questions for both sides.

Not that I know of there are some groups here and there but nothing on the scale of any religion.

Quote:2. For what reason do you go about and try to disprove the beliefs of the theists?

What makes you think I stomp around shitting on peoples beliefs?
If they come here they are fair game though.
It is amazing at the stupid stuff people, even some otherwise intelligent people, make themselves believe. It is entertaining to point this out.

Quote:3. Isn't the belief/knowledge that there is without a doubt no God/gods also faith based? ( I don't just mean the Christian God, but the existence of higher beings in general, and please don't bring up the stupid flying spaghetti monster argument).

Why are you making it so that the question is for die hard athiests?
If you can say no to the question "do you believe in god" then you are an atheist, this still leaves room to be swayed by any evidence.

It's like this.

Do you believe in fairies?

If no than you are discounting the possibility that there may conceivably be some hiding somewhere, you haven't looked the world over personally on a fairy quest so how can you be so dismissive!
Well you can discount fairy existence because it is a silly idea based on old superstitions and beliefs, just like...can you guess where I'm going with this.......god

You can fix ignorance, you can't fix stupid.

Tinkety Tonk and down with the Nazis.

RE: Questions for both sides.
First off, Thank you guys very much for keeping it rational Big Grin

I apologize for some of the vagueness in a few of the questions and for as Mister Agenda put it, possibly coming off as a prejudiced bigot.

I didn't meant mean to come off as trying dictate the course and nature of the discussion, I'm just not very good at properly explaining what I mean through writing at times ><. I just didn't want to typical cats versus dogs fight in which nothing is really debated and there's just a lot of snarling and bickering.

As for my misguided view on atheists, let's just say that the only experience I've had with those who labeled themselves as atheists were the ones who were more extreme. One person that I encountered was the hard-line atheist equivalent of the crazy preachers that walk around condemning everyone to hell.

The reason I brought up the FSM argument was not because I believe it's invalid but rather that it fails to really convince anyone who isn't already in favor of the argument, at least for the most part.

Part of my mistake was that I expected there to be more theists and level 7 (not sure if that's the right way to describe it?) atheists on the forum.

As for the whole why not believe in the FSM/Pink unicorn I'll go with the 6 rating on the spectrum as a response to that.

Thanks again all for the responses and the few welcomes scattered throughout and sorry for the long post. (Not sure what you mean by introduction thread? I'm assuming you mean my first? New to this kinda of thing sorry)

And Kayenneh, I'm still waiting in dread for the day Cthulhu wakes up ;P

Just curious....WHERE would a hard line atheist condemn you to?

Regarding the first question for the Atheists, I think it's interesting that there isn't one, as far as anyone knows. Another thing that is interesting, I've been raised Catholic, and cannot answer any of the Christian questions. How... interesting
"I trust my own reason and my own capacities to think and educate myself and to reach greater levels of knowlege and status through learning and work. To me, wishing for a god is like wishing to be a slave, it is like declaring that one is too incompetent to handle one's own affairs." - the germans are coming

It's been said, that "organizing atheists is a little like herding cats, because they tend to think independently and will not conform to authority'.

You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.

Not that I know of.

Go about where? Outside these forums I'm in the closet about it. Not every atheist is interested in disproving religion, but I do like a good debate.

Thinking
Maybe...but only technically. An infinitesimally small amount, if any. And not blind faith. First, there is a difference between not doubting something and having absolute knowledge of it. Second, by the same logic that this would require faith, so to would assuming that the world wasn't going to be eaten by a giant alien tomorrow require faith. So, not really. Courts require reasonable doubt to let the accused go free. I don't think it is reasonable to think there is a possibility of god existing, and it only cannot be proven because it is typically impossible to prove a negative (unless you can prove a mutually exclusive scenario).

We can only pray to be eaten first.. *sigh*
When I was young, there was a god with infinite power protecting me. Is there anyone else who felt that way? And was sure about it? but the first time I fell in love, I was thrown down - or maybe I broke free - and I bade farewell to God and became human. Now I don't have God's protection, and I walk on the ground without wings, but I don't regret this hardship. I want to live as a person. -Arina Tanemura

Are you ready for the fire? We are firemen. WE ARE FIREMEN! The heat doesn’t bother us. We live in the heat. We train in the heat. It tells us that we’re ready, we’re at home, we’re where we’re supposed to be. Flames don’t intimidate us. What do we do? We control the flame. We control them. We move the flames where we want to. And then we extinguish them.

Impersonation is treason.
