Chavez considered himself to be a Christian. I remember reading him say that he considered becoming a priest. I do not know how serious he was about his Christianity but it is interesting to see that left is becoming more open to religion. I have seen this in the united states also.

The New Testament preaches a form of communism, at least for those who are in the church. Also the New Testament anticipates this economic system to replace all others when Jesus comes to establish his kingdom on earth. Quote:And all who believed were together and had all things in common. And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. Therefore one can be a Christian and a Socialist or even a Communist. Indeed such people are more faithful to the teachings of the New Testament especially than those Christians who favor Capitalism. Also in history there have plenty of Christian Socialists or Communists. Since I believe that Capitalism is a better economic system than Communism or Socialism. Therefore I regard Christian socialists and communists as even more moronic than Christians who arent. :p

The Bible does not teach that there should be a centralized state that redistributes wealth and takes control of property (although it does talk about redistribution of wealth in the Old Testament). It is more like a hostility to greed and materialism and an acceptance of love and charity and a suspicion of self interested values, although I think Christianity and capitalism can exist together. Of course, the Bible doesn't really teach much in the way of political theory; and given the fact that every iteration of the state of Israel in the Bible is said to have collapsed underneath its own weight, I can't be too surprised at that.
