Because I'm angry at God and want to worship Satan and eat babies.

I was raised in a practicing Catholic family but can clearly remember from a young age wondering how it was that anybody could actually believe in any of the stupid things that I heard and read about in religion. I also very quickly became horrified with religious opinions on homosexuality, abortion, divorce, etc. I can honestly say that I have always felt repulsed by religion from as soon as I was able to think about it on my own. As an adult, I have studied religious history in depth and found the development of the religious "truths" taken for granted today to be a long story of hatred, fear and slaughter that we should be ashamed of.

My further education about and understanding of the universe as we know it suggests to me that there is no Creator and that, even if there were, it would be a Being so utterly removed from our human understanding and experience as to make it irrelevant to our existence here. I see no reason for there to be any afterlife and I made my peace with that too.

My view of religion now is that it is a fairytale, wrapped tightly in tradition, and that I'm far better off without it. My children know nothing of any God or religion and I hope they never will.

Why am I an atheist?

Because there is no compelling evidence for a god’s existence.

My children know nothing of any God or religion and I hope they never will.

Good luck with that. My stepson pursues alternative realities, mystic reunion and all that rot in spite of his mother and I having none of it. His father is an eternal spiritual searcher type but I'm not sure contamination has to come in that way. The culture can be the source of the infection and perhaps there is something about our psyche which leaves us all vulnerable? It calls many to the rocks like the sirens of old.

Idk. I just think its weird that he votes republican. That is not something I expect to find in most black people and an atheist at that. From his explanations though, I get why he is a republican. It's because he likes money and have a superiority complex.

Indeed. "Hope" is the key word there I think - I know I won't be able to control what they do beyond childhood and since the rest of my family is pretty religious there will always be church weddings, christenings, funerals, etc. Religion plays on the age-old fears about death and the meaning of life. All we can try to do is raise kids with decent self-esteem and a good enough education that they never feel the need to rely on these hideous systems to fill gaps in their lives.

Your assumption would be correct, I don't believe in god for the same reason that I don't believe in pixies. More importantly, it wouldn't matter if belief wasn't required - if I could look up and see the christian god looking down. My conscience wouldn't allow me to be a christian.
