I'm starting to wish I'd gone to Utah instead of germany in my seed spreading days..lol (but then I'd have child support enforcement on my ass and who wants that, amiright?).

thinking about it .............. Marriage is a financial arrangement and prior to the ad-vocation of the abrahamic religions, the only political law available was religious based. (correct my understanding if you would please our historians) As such, extrapolation of your thought experiment Dawd, it COULD be seen that a multiple union of multiple males and females could come under corporate law since in the end...marriage is nothing about religion and everything about finances. In the context of christianity and european culture (which would be the context that marriage has taken largely) there was little to no religious interference (the church kept records - that was about it) and not much in the way of formal ceremony except in the case of royalty (where such a rigid system would be useful to preserve the line). It could be sealed with a sentence, no fanfare, no ring. This continued to the mid 1500's (iirc).
Comparatively, other earlier (non-christian) european cultures had much more elaborate and rigid systems - though this also is not uniform.
