You can not be "more moderate" when saddled with a facistic platform which only seeks to help the upper 1% of the country. "More" moderate is no where close to moderate "enough."

The base of the republicunt party is made up of stark-raving nutters.

Exactly. Their type of policies aren't even heard of UK politics, they'd be off the chart right wing here, far too extreme.

We do know we have a problem. We have a center-right party - called the democrats and a fanatical fascist maniac party called the republicunts.

Oh, and just to add to my original point, neither one had any examples of apostasy (ala Christie). For all the hype about McCain being a "maverick", he was quite willing to toe the party line. This included making nice with the rival, W, who destroyed him in the primary in 1999 with his unethical push-polling. McCain swallowed what must have been a stinging defeat by a doofy drunk from Texas, voting with him and supporting him through his presidency. Romney had a past to cover up with his governorship in Mass. But he made up for it by quickly running to the far right. Any trace of his centrism was long gone by 2012.

Neither one of them has been seen betraying the party or abandoning the party line like Christie. Hell, in some GOP circles, Christie was called a "traitor" and blamed for the 2012 loss. Good luck coming back from that.

Not saying it won't happen. I've been wrong before but I just don't see the GOP mantra of "never apologize, never compromise, never negotiate" allowing for someone like Christie to come back to the fold.

ETA: What I find sickening is how people who did serve, like John Kerry, are not given credit for their sacrifices. I seem to remember the Right attacking his service record during his presidential run... Many young men dodged the Draft, I don't find that in and of itself "bad." But we shouldn't demonize those who did serve in a very unpopular war.
