Solution:

Decrease gamma of scanner

Open up image in photoshop or GIMP

Adjust levels.

Some tutorials out there are on DA pertaining to scanning in light drawings...

I'm guessing the one holding the book will be Apo. Not so sure about the other. I'd make summer dark haired so I don't think that's her. Not sure.
