Sitting here watching The First 48 and wondering how people don't understand that being disingenuous only comes back to bite them in the ass later.

Is that because you go on most other days?

Wizard’s First Rule: people are stupid.

Watching someone on Twitch play Xenogears. I think everyone has that one piece of media - film, music, painting, etc. - that they encounter in their formative years that really influences who they decide to be as a person. Xenogears is that for me. A bunch of flawed people doing their best to stand up for each other and do what’s right. It’s one of the few games I consider to be art, because it actually tries to say something about the human condition. It’s hard to believe it was released almost 20 years ago.

One of the places I used to work at had a high enough turnover from the bad management that getting bit on the ass was way in the future, and many times was avoided by the departures of the abused. In fact, a readily recognized path to promotion was to abuse fellow employees. They'd get promoted to keep them away from the people and hardware. We even had one supervisor who had to park her car where it couldn't be touched, after one of her direct reports said he would vandalize it at his earliest opportunity, but wasn't fired for said threats. Not long after I started there, I experienced it (verbal), but in an effort to keep my job, I just went with it. Once the bitch exploded at someone who actually took her to HR, the inquisition started. She ended up with a week off, no pay. And bitched about it for the entire time I remained on that job. It was about the time that corporate started getting upset about the many million-dollar harassment suits being won by employees. I knew people who were physically battered at work, and were told by HR to "Sort it out amongst yourselves". This, in a multinational corporation with tens of thousands of employees. I got jacked around for years, but by then the "golden handcuffs" had been latched. Too old to go and start a "career" somewhere else, and heavily invested in the 401(k) and retirement plan (which, BTW, is no longer offered, after that company was swallowed by another). There's a point where starting over at another company will have you working until you drop dead over your desk (which is what I figured would happen to me). My supervision had the cheek to ask me at what age I was going to retire (illegal, BTW), about 4 years ago. I told them 65, but when I talked to my money guy in early 2014, I found out that I could retire that year. I put all my work data in a folder on the shared drive and went and gave notice. Fuggem.
