It was about the time that corporate started getting upset about the many million-dollar harassment suits being won by employees. I knew people who were physically battered at work, and were told by HR to "Sort it out amongst yourselves". This, in a multinational corporation with tens of thousands of employees. 
I got jacked around for years, but by then the "golden handcuffs" had been latched. Too old to go and start a "career" somewhere else, and heavily invested in the 401(k) and retirement plan (which, BTW, is no longer offered, after that company was swallowed by another). There's a point where starting over at another company will have you working until you drop dead over your desk (which is what I figured would happen to me). My supervision had the cheek to ask me at what age I was going to retire (illegal, BTW), about 4 years ago. I told them 65, but when I talked to my money guy in early 2014, I found out that I could retire that year. I put all my work data in a folder on the shared drive and went and gave notice. Fuggem.
