Just got back from a trivia night for my old college. My team managed to win the tournament, losing only two questions: the bitter liqueur made in Chicago and the oldest suburbs in Chicago. I have never heard of Jeppson's Malort or St. Charles, IL, but it looks like nobody else knew that "Sweet Home Chicago" was originally a Robert Johnson song. I would have been back earlier, but we ended up having three bonus rounds to determine who was supposed to be third place.





Also, I discovered the best-looking (and certainly best-preserved) example of two-strip Technicolor this side of the King of Jazz Blu-Ray.

here. The ephemeral nature of this may, ironically, have led to its being so well-preserved. No need to run off the narrative hundreds of times, fading it to shit. Just one print that has somehow managed to not turn into unusually flammable vinegar, probably from being stored in a place nobody would bother to look for it.

Finally sitting down doing nothing -- just after midnight Winnipeg time.

I had my last ballet class of the summer session, then did a paperwork drop-off and went shopping. Pleased to find some black cocoa at the bulk store, rather than regular cocoa. Always wanted to try that stuff in a couple of recipes. Also scored the sparkling wine for my birthday next Tuesday and stowed it away in the fridge.

And then I cooked stuff: A double batch of brownies (most of them for the astronomy group, but some to stay here), some egg salad for tomorrow's lunch, and my first-ever attempt at cacio e pepe ("Cheese and pepper") spaghetti.

Oh, and I washed the dishes.

Twice.

Good thing there's a long weekend coming up... *faints*

I hereby declare today to be Pomodoro Appreciation Day ("Pomodoro" as in "that time management system inspired by a tomato-shaped kitchen timer").

Continuing to dismantle an old plaster wall that divides my office from the large room next to it, so that I can re-frame the doorway with a better beam and then install nice new drywall. Not rushing, for once -- tear off some baseboard, remove nails, take break, rinse, repeat.

If the weather hadn't been hot as all fuck earlier in the afternoon (and currently at 90 Fahrenheit), I'd be sitting on the Ravinia lawn with my Dad waiting for Vasily Petrenko to lead the CSO in Beethoven's Fifth (well, with Strauss' Don Juan and Grieg's Piano Concerto before that, but they're not the headlining act). As a result of the heat wave, I'm currently in my room, watching Season 1 of Detectorists.

The postal service just delivered a box onto the front porch. When I picked it up, there was webbing stuck to it. I immediately recognized it as a black widow web; went and got the spider web brush, moved the box it was hiding behind and snuffed it. A little over 2" long, it wasn't all that badass. We've had a bumper crop of lizards this year. I think they may eat the young black widows, which don't have long enough fangs to penetrate skin. It's the first one I've seen in quite awhile. This place is usually rife with the things by now, if one knows where to look. That means I'll have to check out my old truck every time I go to work on it. Those love it, for some reason.

Went out for my Saturday night coffee-and-pastry jaunt, then came home and made bulgogi tacos (recipe from the cookbook Smitten Kitchen Every Day).
