Smart kid if he does it because he could probably go to college for free through the GI bill. The JROTC program will be good practice for him.
Easier ways to get college money. If he does it, I've got some advice for signing up.
Make sure you get an mos you really want -no settling-. Remember, recruiters are salesmen with quotas and bonuses. If you can do whatever it is they're offering elsewhere, for better pay and dealing with less day to day military shit, opt for that instead. The service will also pay back student loans already paid out, you can get in as an officer...and you'll have even more choice military and civilian.
Advice: Tell him to stay away anything US military until you have a stable president/government.

And even then, after he enlists, we can still elect an unstable president. If Trump can run a campaign like he did and still win, there's no reason it can't happen again. And if he's in the military, he's still beholden to the orders of his commander-in-chief, even if he's legally insane and ordering a nuclear exchange.

He's many years away from even being a prospective tool of the cheeto von tweeto "administration". He's only, what, 14? He has to graduate high school and then go to a university.
As for Khem's advice, totally agree. He can get a guarantee of the school and discipline he wants to pursue, IF he negotiates it up front. If not, he's just their football. If he ends up an officer (which means he matriculated through the ROTC program and graduated from a university), he has a lot more opportunities than otherwise.
The "otherwise" is joining the military as an enlisted person, and when he leaves (if he does- he just may enjoy it and serve until retirement), he can use the GI Bill. I don't know what the GI Bill looks like these days. When I got out, I was able to use the money for a university education (I was enlisted), but truly, I had training and experience as a mechanic even before I joined, and didn't really need the GI Bill money to get me through...though it certainly did help.

Morning is going to be fun. I'll need to help K with his bootstraps and then I'll have to braid S's hair for her. She wants me to cut it this weekend for her.
You had to YouTube for some bootstraps? You silly.
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great

He's only 14, yes.
But do you expect the orange menace to stick to the rules?
Apparently he couldn't even stick to a porn star...

Yeah I did. Not everyone knows how to use them, smart ass.
He got his uniform at the end of the day and they didn't have time to show him how to use them.

Just a quick update on mother in law.
Been transferred to Palliative care at a hospital.
Been vomitting blood since lunchtime!
Not too many sunrises left for poor old Shirley...
The family will take turns to have someone there most hours of the days.
No God, No fear.

Yeah, brutal. Just to commiserate, I'm looking at a significant loss this year - and likely to lose a hefty amount of my business next year because of it, that the wife and I will have to replace over the winter, even as purse strings are tightening here because of layoffs she's overseeing. This, while we try to repair our house and property.
We're not the most popular people in the world right now, lol.
