I got the answer to my question about my absentee ballot. I don't have to do anything in addition to simply walking in to the polling place on election day and voting. That's an enormous weight off my shoulders, as voting in the coming election has become one of the focuses of my life this year. I don't know if I will remain interested in politics after the election, but over the past two months, I've subscribed to two national newspapers (digital version), and receive multiple newsletters in my email which I review each day. Prior to this, thanks largely to chronic depression, I didn't have an interest in much of anything beyond reading and posting on this forum. Over the past two months that has changed and I hope it continues.

Just finished a late breakfast of left-over Hamburger Helper. I made it last night, and that's probably the first time in 20 years. It's definitely the first since losing my fingers 10 years ago. I christened a new iron skillet, and thankfully, there were no major disasters.

Went to my therapist for my weekly appointment. We discussed the business class, and I went into detail about one incident during the "what questions do you ask while reopening a tennis racquet factory" exercise. The other question I had that got shot down was "Maybe we should market these racquets towards the old players who used to swear by them before they closed." They said it was like "Myspace rebranding as Facebook." When recounting this for her she pointed out that sometimes people can have some very different perspectives; they were probably younger than me, and certainly younger at heart. Earlier in the day, I was looking up what sort of guitar strings the old pre-war Bluesmen put on their guitars:

It turns out this is actually a surprisingly contentious question; some guitar historians point to string sets so thick that even the B string was wound, and others point to studies that show that some studies of real vintage strings showed they leaned towards the extremely light. So, here's my attempt at reconciling it: my perusal of catalogues suggests that, early on, they used silk and steel strings. Unfortunately, there is no gauge listed, but I know Silk and Steel tend to lean light, explaining the latter. However, around 1930 (possibly a bit earlier) they introduced "Mona-Steel" (Monel, Nickel) strings and also Bronze strings a bit later. These early catalogues also did not list gauges, but, fortunately, the number attached to the three standard six-string sets did match with a later catalogue that did list gauges. And these did indeed lean pretty heavy. One set was 12-56 (roughly equivalent to medium tension, and, despite the wonky gauges, has a collective tension extremely close to this set and a bit less than these strings). The other two were 14-56 (heavier than most sets today). Admittedly, it's no wonder that many 1960s guitarists messed with the string sets.

Conclusion: The Charley Patton, Blind Willie Johnson generation used silk and steel, and Robert Johnson's era likely used pretty thick Nickel strings.

Also, remarkably, around 2013, Martin reintroduced Monel into guitar strings for Tony Rice, and it was successful enough that, not only did they move out into other gauges, several other manufacturers like D'Addario and Curt Mangnan followed suit.
