Go on another holiday? Or are you sick of exciting holidays? I do know what you mean though, you can only be thrown so many times out of a plane before you remember to take a book with you...
No God, No fear.

Is this going to be on an actual patient with, you know, permission?

No.

Hence "committing" not "performing"

Well, funny thing: yesterday, the P&V translation of Dostoevsky's Notes from a Dead House (his semi-autobiographical novel about life in the proto-Gulag) was released in the Everyman's Library, and because I had it pre-ordered, my copy came the same day. Around the same time, I discovered this adaptation of his last short story, done as a monologue by Jeremy Irons.

It's legitimately one of the most profound statements on the corruption of man, although I probably would have led with the discovery of power more than the discovery of lying. I'm considering making my own take on the story, and I'd probably keep it faithful with the exception of making the decay of the islanders a bit more... familiar to us (and perhaps ending with the last islander trying to stab his reflection in the sea and drowning in it). Otherwise, it's so timeless that it's not even necessary to change it.

And maybe I'd find a way to incorporate this music into the story (mainly in the description of the suicide and the fall of the island's society):

(though this might be a bit more of a long shot, since Dostoevsky's work is public domain and Arvo Pärt's isn't.)
