One year into owning a chinese Xiaomi Redmi 2... but not just any old Redmi 2, a fucking special chinese edition codename 2014813 that never got a non-chinese ROM from Xiaomi, I finally went ahead and followed the instructions which say: pick up a global ROM for the 2014811 version, decompress, replace the file that handles the radio (because this 2014813 version has a radio that works everywhere on Earth, it seems, unlike the other Redmi 2's) extracted from the chinese ROM and flash the phone. (instructions here: http://en.miui.com/thread-105707-1-1.html).

Well, it did give me a little scare, just after flashing the ROM, saying I had to update the "Google Play Services" app, but I also had to update it to use the play store which handles updating apps... so there was a bit of a cycle that had to be broken if I ever wanted to use any of google's stuff....
In the end, I used the browser to download the new apk file for that "app" and installed it.

It seems to be working just fine, now!
They say, MIUI won't update itself properly from now on... meh... the decision to do this ROM exchange was because the latest official update to MIUI 8 was buggy as hell - email wouldn't sync.... heck, nothing would sync unless I went in the app (play store, gmail, even facebook messenger only gave me a notification some 20 minutes after the message was sent)... battery life was atrocious and... well.... lots of chinese apps were there... more than in the previously working great MIUI 7.5.
So, I wanted to go back to MIUI 7.5... used that excuse to go for the global ROM, why not? Not looking forward to updating to MIUI 8 anytime soon.

(btw, should I put up a glossary for all these terms?)


EDIT: spoken too soon.... can't uninstall anything... it does nothing and reboots... FML!
Backing up everything... going to reflash this thing, but now cleaning out everything... (it's the advisable way... I just didn't want to reinstall all apps again... oh well... live and learn)
