I always thought a black Russian was a measure each of vodka and liquor de cafe, like a white Russian sans dairy. Is that not what it is?

Right. The vodka/coffee liqueur/cola combo (with dairy) is a Colorado Bulldog. At least that's the name I knew it by in my bartending days, though I suppose there are several regional variations on the name.
