RE: What's everyone up to right now?

Renovations in my study earlier in the day. Put up one sheet of drywall and fitted a 2x4 into an open wall so that the railing on the other side will have better support.
Went out to run errands -- gas up the car, reload my bus pass -- and stopped for a snack.
Continued my writing/editing project by rewriting the intro to another one of my books.
And I finished transcribing the clarinet parts for a virtually unreadable march that we're playing on Remembrance Day. Learned a few more tips and tricks for the software I'm using, and printed out two extremely good-looking copies of the music. I suspect the trumpets (who are right behind us in the band room) will be jealous.

I just checked the preview of the Target Black Friday ad. The Amazon Fire HD 10 is $100 in it, which I expect will be the Amazon price on Black Friday. The Target preview is listing a price of $59.99 for the Fire HD 8, so if the Target ad is an indicator of the likely Amazon price, the HD 8 won't drop any further. I haz a sad, as well as a more difficult decision to make.
I'm also considering a new laptop/netbook instead of a tablet, as both would serve basically the same function. After reading an article about 'everything' that the ChromeBook can do while offline, I've come to the conclusion that.... the ChromeBook is pretty useless offline. A regular laptop, though, might be an option. They can be had for as low as $150 for a budget model, and probably less come Black Friday.
Looking at budget computer printers. Unfortunately the bulk of them have high operating costs, so it's somewhat a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation.

Brewing a pot of decaf. Still haven't got a complete hold on my new coffee grinder. It grinds the coffee too finely and I'm putting too much bean in the hopper. Oh well.
I found a printer that's both inexpensive and affordable to operate. It's only $60 from Amazon and a set of high yield OEM cartridges is less than $35. It probably won't be on sale come Black Friday, but I suppose at that price it's not a big deal.

Finally got the right disc for Logic's Everybody. I figured that, before I asked the Library about this, I'd inspect their copy of Far East Movement's Free Wired. Since that was the disc that came with Everybody, I decided to check and see if the last person to check out both albums switched out the discs. This theory was right. I swapped the discs, and went on my way. The only problem with this was that it took several circuits of the parking lot to actually find a space that wasn't reserved for handicapped people or pregnant women.

Brought a full 4 x 8 sheet of drywall from the garage and all the way up to the second floor, mostly by myself. (My daughter, who was mixing up some noms in the kitchen, held the back door out of my way so I could get the sheet into the house.) Somehow I managed to get that sucker over the railing on the main floor, onto and then up the stairs, and around two corners.
Fortunately, all the sheets remaining in the garage have to be cut to shorter lengths, so they'll be considerably easier to schlep around.
And then I went out for a coffee and cinnamon bun, and spent some quality time reading the New York Times Sunday Arts section in the café.

If you don't need to print in colour, spring for a small HP LaserJet. The cartridge that comes with it lasts damn near forever, and when you do need to replace it, it's not all that much more than a complete set of colour cartridges + black for an inkjet-type printer. (That, and laser cartridges don't dry out and become unusable the way the ink ones do.)
If you do need to do colour printing such as photos, in the long run it may be cheaper to load them on a USB key and print them out at a store kiosk.

I don't do much color printing, but I do occasionally use the scanner, which cheap laser printers lack. I could keep my current printer and double with a laser printer, but that seems less desirable than just getting a good all-in-one inkjet. Canon sells a line of SOHO inkjets, the cheapest of which is currently about the same price as a comparable monochrome laser, so that's probably what I'll go with. I looked at an Epson and Brother printer for $60 each, but the Epson had a lot of one-star reviews, and the Canon had high ink costs. I'll get back $10 of the difference in cost of the Canon MB2120 with my first ink purchase. I don't do any photo printing so inkjet quality is more than satisfactory.

Have you looked at the HP ENVY printers? They have decent ratings. The 5055 has print/scan/copy:

I looked at a few. The ones I looked at didn't hit my targets of price, affordability, and quality. Maybe I'll give them another look before I order.
(ETA: The HP ENVY 5055 uses a combined color cartridge and replacement carts are more expensive than for the Canon MB2120. The HP might have better color print quality, but that's not a high priority. The edge probably goes to the Canon.)
