So why make it easy for them to get their hands on guns?
I seems every 6 months or so we hear reports of some nutter going crazy with a gun in a school and killing kids. One nutter with an automatic weapon can kill dozens of kids, if he can only get his hands on a knife that just won't happen.
Sorry... but I'm not convinced, I once had a neighbor who threatened to kill me (he had a record of violent crime), it never came to more than rude words over the garden fence.... but if he had easy access to a gun I would probably be feeding the worms now.

I feel the same. I have been attacked by a guy with a knife before. I'd be dead if it was a gun.

Do you think police should have guns?
If so, why?
If not, why?

Yes but only in exceptional circumstances.

I know you weren't asking me, but I don't want the regular police to have guns. The police here don't carry guns and I still don't feel safe around them.
Having armed units and stuff on standby is fine with me as they are occasionally needed.

How did he get three shots from a double-barreled shotgun without reloading?

Its the same as allowing them to play wth toy guns.
Except that you can't accidentally chamber a round in a toy gun and blow someone's head off. Let kids play with real guns when they're unloaded, what do you think they'll do when those same guns are laying around loaded?

I was raised around guns. You can walk into my parent's house and find pistols, rifles, and shotguns in every bedroom and in every closet. They have a LOT of guns and always have.
My brother and I were raised in that house and none of us died, or were shot, or shot a wall/roof/furniture/etc.
I read those examples of gun deaths at the beginning of the article.
The first one was fucked up because a parent left a gun laying around where a toddler could get it. He needs to be prosecuted. The other two occurred where kids old enough to know better played with guns like they are toys.
If you're going to have guns around and you're a parent, this is what you do.
A)Keep the guns up high and away from kids until they are a little older.
B)When they get a little older 5 or 6, you take them out and let them watch you shoot things with the gun like a watermelon or something. Scares the shit out of them and they realize that guns are really fucking dangerous.
C)Teach them two things: 1) ALWAYS treat a gun like it is loaded. 2) NEVER point a gun at someone unless you are going to kill them.
Seems like most that end up accidentally killing themselves had retarded parents that didn't teach them fuck all anything about guns.
Everything I needed to know about life I learned on Dagobah.

@fff
You seem like what I need here. Forgive me if I offend, because I don't know my ass from my elbow when it comes to guns or gun culture.
A main theme of the article (and of my general experience, which I realize comes to about fuck-all) is that the gun culture/NRA (is there a difference?) absolutely refuses to even have a conversation about how to make gun laws which make life safer- laws forcing parents to keep guns safe, designing smart guns, keeping guns out of the hands of lunatics. They seem to always construct the strawman of "You're trying to take my guns away!" The horse is clearly out of the barn on gun ownership, and even my most rabid anti-gun acquaintances will admit this. But why can't we have a constructive conversation about more regulated gun ownership? Is there REALLY that great a fear that having a conversation about regulating guns will devolve into banning guns- which everyone knows will never happen? It seems to me that one can never get past the strawman and actually talk about the really, really big problems with guns in America.
Can you address some of this?
