Atheists and Agnostics risk infinite loss for no gain
RE: Atheists and Agnostics risk infinite loss for no gain
I've read some dense stuff from Christians on this forum, but geeze, is this guy their leader?

My wife actually said something similar to this to me before. Something along the lines of "You think about things too much."

That's the mantra of the tea-baggers, too. Do you suppose it is a coincidence?

I'm still waiting to hear why I should worship a cruel and vengeful god which threatens me with eternal torture. I guess that's too hard a question.

If I have to go by past answers to this question, SBG will respond with one of the following:

1. God makes the rules and is all powerful, so we have no choice but to honor his will. (might makes right)

2. We're all worthless sinners who deserve Hell but only by God's gift of salvation are some of us saved.

3. God doesn't want to send anyone to hell, but some people choose to go there. (ignoring the doctrine that God made everything, including Hell, and set up the system of sending everyone there unless they're in his special club)
Christian apologetics is the art of rolling a dog turd in sugar and selling it as a donut.

I find it funny that people still seem to think threats will suddenly make you believe in things. Even more so when you don't believe in the thing that they use in the threat.

Hey! Believe in the unicorn or it will kill you!

When I was young, there was a god with infinite power protecting me. Is there anyone else who felt that way? And was sure about it? but the first time I fell in love, I was thrown down - or maybe I broke free - and I bade farewell to God and became human. Now I don't have God's protection, and I walk on the ground without wings, but I don't regret this hardship. I want to live as a person. -Arina Tanemura

It's definitely not a coincidence. Reasoning and questioning are fatal to all forms of fundamentalism, whether they be based on some holy book, or the Constitution, or some dimly understood policy position cribbed from the Heritage Foundation.

As Bill Maher once said of the tea-baggers: They love Truth; it's facts they can't stand.

If there are multiple "believe or damned" choices, look fro the one that is true.

Since i wasn't asking for a rule of thumb, I have to interpret that as an admission that it doesn't matter how high the stakes are if you don't think something is true, you won't believe it.

The agnostic or atheist has nothing to fear unless the claim is true. Without a good reason to think the claim is true, it doesn't matter how high the stakes are. Same reason I don't send money to Nigerian princes.

There is just me and way too many questions to be answered.

Most are just a brush off or more of the same question.

I wish I could do more, but time does not permit it.

No worries. We know you're outnumbered here. It helps to focus on the questions you consider most challenging.

At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist.  This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair.  Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second.  That means there's a situation vacant.'

I'm not against you, DT, just adding my ideas to yours.

SOB, excuse me, SBGTF is forgetting God's omniscience. We're not honoring anything when the big guy already knows what we're going to do and where we're going. There is no free will, just pre-planned destiny. Why did God create anything when he knows everything that will happen? Sounds kinda boring to me.

Quote:2. We're all worthless sinners who deserve Hell but only by God's gift of salvation are some of us saved.

I'm a sinner, but I'm not worthless. Any God that doesn't acknowledge my value is BS.

Quote:3. God doesn't want to send anyone to hell, but some people choose to go there. (ignoring the doctrine that God made everything, including Hell, and set up the system of sending everyone there unless they're in his special club)

Read the OT. God DID want to send some people to Hell. A lot of people. And Jesus' "believe in me or burn" philosophy isn't any kind of improvement.
