Stepping into the role of devil's advocate (ah a knee slapper considering the subject) here;
When our youth pastor was going over that in our studies, Max, he claimed it was because Lucifer was "the great deceiver" and had fooled these angels into following them.
Lucifer was an arch-angel if memory serves, so perhaps it boiled down to him being their commanding officer if you will.

So let me understand this properly. These are angels that saw and knew God - the all powerful, all knowing etc. etc.
Yet, they could be sweet talked out of supporting him by Lucifer? Way to go Lucy!
Doesn't sound massively credible does it?
Or is God just one of those guys that doesn't really impress up close?

He seems more like the victim of propaganda to me.

"Well god allowed it to happen, he could have stopped him if he wanted to."
Interesting. This either means that God is happy to sacrifice a full 1/3rd of his angels who could have been saved for......what exactly? To make it a fairer fight with Satan? If that was his aim then surely 50% would have been right.
On the other hand he may have decided that all of those angels were basically evil. This of course raises the question - why is God making evil angels?
Sense is strangely lacking here somehow.

Indeed, Christian arguments rarely rely on sense.
I never understood why a deity that could change the universe at will would allow on of his own creations to rebel in what is basically his own house. Makes no sense.
Kind of leaning towards the douchebag sadist god idea eh?
"Oh hey that's interesting, a third of my angels are rebelling with Lucifer! Why don't I slap them on the wrist and kick them out of the house so they can wreak havoc on creation? Might give me a jolly good laugh!"
