RE: Google Wave invites
I actually want it badly because I see many things I can do with it to help communication with Anime Boston people. Big Grin

Twitter is one of the most useless forms of communication. It's just fun for saying quick tidbits, and not much more.

Twitter useful? I'd like to see some evidence of that.

Twitter is the fastest news service on the planet. It has connected millions of people together in a way they have never been before, and has provided a microblogging platform that is more attractive to people who don't have the time to write a full one (i.e. most people).

So it contains a lot of litte data. Is there a proper information retrieval system to collect these bits of data to be of any use?

Yes. The Twitter API and the search functions included have opened up Twitter to so many analyzing tools. Twitter itself looks constantly for "trending topics", i.e. what is being talked about most on Twitter at any given time. Other services use methods to do the same thing.

A fun example is http://cursebird.com, which does real-time tracking of swear words on Twitter. Of course, you can easily track any such words, or topics, or information you needed in the same way.

Isn't twitter kind of like Wikipedia with much smaller articles, NO fact checking, and instant distribution based on opt-in sign up?

It seems to me as either a plaything for people who don't have time to update facebook, or one of the worst ways of obtaining information... ever!
