Another point to think about is how poorly Christianity jives with multiculturalism. While epicureanism doesn't in embrace it specifically, it's tenants certainly seem to encourage it. A lot of the problems with the barbarians came from their exclusion from roman culture especially with the Visigoths and vandals who were shunned for following a different form of Christianity.
