The question that makes fundies hostile
RE: The question that makes fundies hostile
@ missluckie26, I researched about God through Strong's Concordance, very reliable for the Hebrew and Greek meanings and application.

The Allah works come from my pastor, very good researcher and teacher, extremely intelligent man. It could take some time to get his reference work.
The Asherah comes from scripture, God Himself sad to destroy the Asherah goddess, why would He have done this if she were real and His wife.
Doing a study of the Middle East religions you have to separate, them from one another, most had become a combination of the various religions, the Israelites were doing this as well as anyone else, this is why God continually punished them. The OT Bible is the real form of Judaism, the relationship between the Israelites and God.
History shows what the mixture of the worship of God and the other religions, Baal, Asherah and ect., looked like. History shows what the real Baal and Asherah worship was about. We have to keep all this separate to be able to understand religion in that are in those days.

I never said that they worshiped the moon, I'm saying the took a combination of the OT and the moon god worship, those parts they chose and made a new religion from the combination. I understand they believe they worship the God of Judaism, the reality of it is they combined two religions to make the one they liked. This in no way resembles what the Israelites and Christians do, we worship God for who He is, not for what we want Him to be, though I know Christians that try and make God into what they want. We do not choose God as other religions do, God chooses us.

Yeah! Those crazy Israelites! Had they only done a better job of genocide we would not have to be having a discussion on the internet over what God's name is!

Perhaps if they'd had access to the same tech the Germans had in WW2 they would have been able to do a better job. Smashing babies heads against rocks is a lamentably inefficient way to wipe out an entire civilisation.

You might not like what the Bible reveals to us, but it really doesn't matter, you can't change what happened nor why it happened. You are like so many others in today's Christianity you want to worship a god you can make up, not the One who reveals Himself to the world through scripture and His life as a human being. You blind yourself to His goodness and true nature through your idea of who He should be according to you, you worship the wrong God when you do such a thing.

Maybe he found the true god undiluted by the men who wrote the bible. Maybe he doesn't think the one and true god would go bashing babies heads on rocks. Maybe he has reckoned the attributes a god of such magnitutde as to be the Creator of the universe, are far more pure than that which has been described by the Bible.

As for what you said to me --sorry for butting in there--I'll do some more research and look at Strongs Concordance definitions. I'm not saying god would disown his own wife, I'm saying the evidence I've seen suggests that the Biblical god seems to be intertwined with a whole lot of others, and that this particular one may have just been the victor--thus the need for revisions and evidence for such.
If I were to create self aware beings knowing fully what they would do in their lifetimes, I sure wouldn't create a HELL for the majority of them to live in infinitely! That's not Love, that's sadistic. Therefore a truly loving god does not exist!

Quote:The sin is against an infinite being (God) unforgiven infinitely, therefore the punishment is infinite.

Dead wrong.  The actions of a finite being measured against an infinite one are infinitesimal and therefore merit infinitesimal punishment.

Quote:Some people deserve hell.

I say again:  No exceptions.  Punishment should be equal to the crime, not in excess of it.  As soon as the punishment is greater than the crime, the punisher is in the wrong.

Its an interesting question.

If God is who he reveals to us through scripture, in the old testament at least, its hard not to be "blind to his goodness". Not least because he comes across as a trigger happy, vindictive and capricious deity, who punishes the innocent right along with the guilty and turns a blind eye to staggeringly immoral acts on one hand whilst coming down like a ton of bricks on some others, seemingly at random. Ask King Davids wives. They got raped, in public mind you, at Gods command... because HE, David, had gotten his end away with another mans wife then sent him away to be killed. That makes no fucking sense whatsoever. How is that Good?!

You are however correct in one particular. There are many areas of the OT where I can see no "goodness". I'm not going to CALL it good, just because men say God told them to do it. And since I believe that God IS good, that leaves me with simple and entirely plausible conclusion that God has been rather widely misreported.

Godschild, we agree that there are many people today who use God to their own ends, to gull people out of money and to justify their behaviors. They CLAIM God is speaking to them, but he's not. If you can believe that men are doing that today, why can you not believe that they may have been doing it way back in the day?

You do exactly the same thing, picking and choosing what attributes you want your god to possess, and then pretending that specific variant is the one true god. It's the reason you don't own slaves, why you haven't tried to kill me and my peeps for not believing, why you shave, and a bunch of other things. You just lack the self awareness to see that.

Interpreted differently is a cop out. El, Baal and Ashura were gods in polytheism which got incorporated into the bible.

The Hebrews simply created a new splinter sect of the old polytheism.

There was never a Baal but there also was never a Yahweh, just like the sun was never a god. There are merely humans who make this crap up and compete with each other over whose superstition is real.

The Hebrews merely took the polytheism and streamlined it into one god.

I choose to accept the God of scripture and all His attributes, I understand why God did what He did in the OT, that's why I have no problem with the OT. If I were to choose the attributes of God that made Him real to me and leave out the others would mean I'm worshiping a god that's not the One scripture describes, thus where would I be in my salvation, bad shape I would presume.

As I see it, they reason that this question bothers them so much is that it puts them in a bind. They are forced to admit that contemporary secular morality is obviously more advanced and rational than Biblical barbarism, or admit to being psychotic.

The Bible is where one can find the true God, the Bible isn't contaminated. The only place you will find the Biblical God intertwined with other gods is out side the Bible, plenty of that stuff in historical accounts. Missluckie26, if you knew me as those here where I live you would know I'm not on to be lead around by the nose. I question much even my pastor at times, I seek truth not what people want me to believe.

Serious question GC, why do you believe that the Bible, in its entirety, is true.

I'm curious.

No, the bible is where YOU want the one true god to be. So the fuck what. Muslims think the Koran is the divine book inspired by their god.

Get in line take a number, self serving circular reasoning doesn't impress us in the least.

Quote:I seek truth not what people want me to believe.

No, you seek excuses to cling to your position. Real quality control isn't about apology, real quality control is kicking the shit out of a claim, then having others kick the shit out of the claim.

Your "truth" is the same bad reasoning skill that leads others to believe in their gods as well, "It feels right", "I want it to be true".

Oh and the bible IS contaminated on every page, with scientifically absurd claims, and outright moral repugnance lead by a bloodthirsty dictator god.
