As much as I hear feminists going on and on about cultural appropriation, it's only fair that the geek environments call Anita out when she's appropriating our culture just so she can complain about it.

Given how she talks about the games, taking things vastly out of context, I'm lead to believe that, no, she isn't a geek/gamer. What she seems to be doing with games is kinda like a Christian quote-mining Charles Darwin or Christopher Hitchens to support their cause.

There is a contradiction. But the lie can go either way, either she lied back in her lecture about not being a gamer and claimed to not play video games (perhaps she did not want the association because of her own feelings towards them) or she lies currently about playing video games. Given the pictures I've seen of her collection, and even as a kid, versus what she claimed back in her lecture, I cannot take a side at this moment. So I'd rather judge her videos on whether or not they have anything of value in them, rather than if she is a TRU GAMER. Yeah I'd think it's rather scummy if she lied, but I still do not see why there is a mass hate thing against her. The shit she says is on TvTropes and everyone seems to LOOOOVE that site.

Also, I stopped considering myself a gamer during certain periods of my life (since I couldnt keep up with newer consoles due to money), but found I was still called a gamer by old friends from MMOs and such so decided to keep the title. And things she has pointed out are things that I noticed as someone a part of the gamer/geek thing, so I'm hesitant to label her as of right now. I will admit, that video raises a question about her gamer status, but I do not find that to be very damning.

Yes, I've seen TVTropes and I like it and it's actually helped inspire me. But I still think what Anita has done is focus in on the small part that's about legitimate misogyny (small in comparison to the rest of the TVTropes site) and put a microscope over it.

I'm still inclined to believe that she isn't really into gamer/geek culture because I've seen a few geek/gamer girls critique real issues within the culture and they've done so in ways that show that they still appreciate and understand the medium. For example.

And then there's someone like Felicia Day who is absolutely beloved by geek culture and she doesn't go around looking for misogyny under every rock or behind every tree and she seems to understand what she talks about and she gets the context.

Sarkesian doesn't seem to me like she's a geek/gamer. She strikes me more as a feminist trying to critique geek/gamer culture and that's a very different thing. Sure, you can be a geek/gamer and a feminist, but she doesn't strike me as being both.

I think that, if Anita truly is a gamer, she likes the games in spite of finding problems with them. Granted, I only watched her first video on damsels in distress but that was my 'vibe'. This is kinda an interpretive dance sort of thing, but that being said I can see where you are coming from. Also, she did a ted talk video and did comment on liking video games because they are fun and can benefit a person - that's pretty much what I would say as a 10 year old intensive gamer up to age 16 (I did play video games younger but would only say they are 'fun'). And I will still, as a casual gamer, say the same thing.

Also, the Nostalgia Chick is great, and I will agree she is much better at this shit. I haven't seen those girls above and below her before but I'll check em out.

Yes, I think gamer culture has misogyny in it, no doubt. I've heard it thrown at me a time or two when I'm playing World of Warcraft and I've had other geek/gamers who are actually really surprised that I'm a girl gamer and I'm pretty good (I kinda like that, though, because it makes it so much more satisifying to beat them).

But I also think there's certain feminists who have a bad habit of making misogyny where no misogyny actually exists and this is a problem... and it should be seen as a problem to other feminists. Specifically, it starts to turn into a boy who cried wolf thing. If they call eveyrthing misogyny, people are going to start dismissing them whenever they talk about misogyny. When that happens and real misogyny rears its ugly head, nobody is listening to them so it's kinda hard to do something about it.

I've only watched his videos where he exposed Annita Sarkisian for the dishonest, lying, fraud that she was, and I thought he was quite good.
Can you post the videos where he says women deserve to be raped?

I'm at work now, so I can't youtube. It was only one video I saw, and I couldn't bring myself to watch it because it made me too angry. It was posted here before, I think TFAC posted it? I'll have a look now.
