Don't bother. Some Spanish speaking countries have different meanings for those words. I know that in Argentina pendejo is not profanity, but rather something that references being or looking young. In Mexico it means idiot or stupid to a higher degree lol. Puta means whore and so does puto. Cabron means... hmmm... something like douche.

There is a reason they say "curse like a sailor."
I have a lot of practice moderating it, though. I had to with my parents my whole life. So, place and time.
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great

In general, words have not just a denotation but a connotation: an emotional coloring distinct from what the word literally refers to, as in principled versus stubborn and slender versus scrawny. The difference between a taboo word and its genteel synonyms, such as shit and feces, cunt and vagina, or fucking and making love, is an extreme example of the distinction. Curses provoke a different response than their synonyms in part because connotations and denotations are stored in different parts of the brain.
This seems the best explanation I've heard on the subject to date.
It's not the word itself, it's the connotation that it carries. Slender versus scrawny really drove it home for me. However, were I to play devil's advocate: I always felt that the word shit was just a word to describe feces and that the word poop was just another slang term; equal to and no more offensive than the word shit. I've even heard the expression, "So what's the poop on that?" when requesting information.
It would seem that words that are found to be profane are only found to be profane by the crowd you keep. My mother hated the word "poop" and wouldn't allow me to use it as a child.
Perhaps, profanity, like morality is not objective and those who get upset about it are projecting their own subjectivity.

I like to use profanity quite a bit. Fuck and any derivative of it, is probably one of my favorite words in the English language.
Personally I think that profanity being taboo is in some way connected to religion. I couldn't tell you exactly how or why, but I'm suspicious that curse words usually have something to do with sex and bodily functions, topics that religious groups typically enjoy suppressing. Just in the title shit and piss are both bodily functions and fuck and ass reference sex. And damn has it's roots in religion as well (e.g. "You will be damned to the fiery depths of Hell!").
Also, the thought that a word somehow has the magic power of being terrible for no good reason other than "it just is" does not appeal to me.

I rarely use profanity.
When I do, it is most likely directed toward someone in a derogatory manner, and that is probably the reason why profanity is more a negative than a positive.

I recently learned how to swear like a Québécoise. "Tabernak" - a curse word usable in any situation where the f-bomb works in English. I'm bringing it back to the U.S.
I say fuck and it's derivatives a lot - but I think everyone already knew that.
