When I do, it is most likely directed toward someone in a derogatory manner, and that is probably the reason why profanity is more a negative than a positive.
That's just it - the great majority of my cussing is NOT done in a derogatory manner. For instance, "I've got to go pick up some fucking groceries," is just something that I would say at any given moment. "That is some good shit," and "Oh fuck no, I'll be damned if I'm going to use that paint color," is just a few more of thousands of examples of expletives I regularly use that have no derogatory intent behind them.

I think the answer for me would be shitkickingly obvious.

I can't remember a time when I didn't use curse words frequently.

I think the most I ever used profanity before I ceased was in sixth grade during a rebellious stage.

Spoken/written language is the main way we communicate with one another and people will be sensitive to different things. American society has become very sensitive to certain words being used in what is considered an improper context. Using the words "gay" or "retarded" as a pejorative is frowned upon, although neither word is obscene or offensive when used properly. The word "rape" is not obscene but using it in a different context (to describe an impressive victory in a game, for example) can lead to a significant backlash. There are words and contexts we avoid in order to maintain a peaceful (or at least non-volatile) environment.
Swear words are similar for me. It's difficult to know how people are going to react to their use, so I don't use them around people I don't know well enough. I also don't use them around people that I know will find them offensive, unless I am deliberately seeking to offend, which is something I almost never do. There is also context to keep in mind. Swearing during a tense situation might be the match that lights a powder keg. "Calm down, please" may have a very different outcome than "calm the fuck down, already." The swear word by itself can be seen as an escalation.
Many people who know me don't bat an eye when I swear, because they've heard me do so frequently. And many people who know me would be shocked to hear me swear, because I don't do so when they are around. It's not a matter of how wrong/right the words happen to be, as much as a social instinct. If not swearing is the cost of keeping those people around me, they are worth the effort.
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."

According to science, people who swear a lot are more honest and trustworthy. This is what I tell my mother when she won't fucking get off my back.

I've been trying to cut back recently, because my 2 year old has been attempting to say, "BOOM BITCH!" after watching me play football and Call of Duty.
I think it's hilarious, but I have to suppress that and try to do some parenting. lol.

I've never really considered "douche" a swear word.

OH... I didn't know what jerkoff meant before coming here either. I'm such an innocent little darling, aren't I?
I put moderately, but it is really somewhere between moderately and all the time. (I didn't put all the time because I will bite my tounge if someone requests that I not swear). More specifically, I don't swear in public, and I consider AF to be public, so I don't swear here. (Additionally, because this is not in real time, I can more easily think of substitute words for obscenities that still get my point across).
To me, words like the F word are mainly used for emphasis, and to express disappointment. You can say "darn it", but that will never properly express your disappointment as compared to advanced vulgarities. In my opinion, people are thin skinned if they are offended by swear words, unless said words are directed at them. If you say: "Today was awful" you could interject the F word for more dramatic emphasis than "very", while not insulting anyone.
I don't, however, randomly interject profanities into a sentence for no reason. I swear (no pun intended) that some of my classmates in high school had a kind of magical linguistic power. How else do you create a sentence in which three out of every four words is an obscenity while remaining grammatically comprehensible?
